According to European folklore, 11 - 14 May are the Catholic feast days of the Ice Saints, when the final cold snap of the year bursts in on our Spring idyll and sends us scurrying for shelter, and even turning the heating back on in disbelief.

Today, on the feast of Saint Servatius, we were served hail, thunder AND lightning. It was quite exhilarating, when experienced across the comfortingly dry threshold of A Balcony in Kensington.

Worth having the sound UP for this one, so full immersion in the elements.

Followers of this page will already know about my great friend and hugely talented gardener Camilla Shivarg.

Every year to coincide with the Chelsea Flower Show, Camilla opens up her award-winning garden at 286 Earls Court Road for a plant sale. This is a fixture eagerly awaited by gardeners in Kensington & Chelsea and beyond. Come to see the garden and pick up a plant. Who knows, you may find yourself chatting with some rather fine fellow gardeners.

The plant sale is on Thursday and Saturday this week, and sells out, so don’t tarry, and I may see you there!

A Balcony in Kensington on Tour

There are some traditions I like - usually ones built around the pretext of time with friends - and one long established tradition is Easter at my dear friend, Camilla Shivarg’s, cottage in Wendover.

As well as being a hugely accomplished sculptor, Camilla is a passionate and knowledgeable plantswoman. Over the years, I’ve absorbed much practice and some wisdom from her, as she marshalls the seasons in her gardens (her London garden is regularly garlanded with awards).

A bit like cooking, gardening is one of the things one talks about, isn’t it? They come with their own traditions and devout observations. So to spend time with Camilla is to steep oneself in decades of gardening, and experience both hard- and pleasantly earned. I soak it all up, and put what I can into my pots.

Easter in the cottage garden is a quiet moment, before the extraordinary splendour of her summer planting, which is when she spends most time there. So more of that to come, but for now, enjoy the tulips and the fritillaries, the cowslips and the budding wisteria, the birdsong and trickle of the brook that runs along the edge of this beautiful cottage garden.

Flowering is thirsty work.

I was talking to a dear friend in Northumberland yesterday, and she says they’re still in daffodil season and waking up to frost every morning.

Meanwhile here in London, we’ve had weeks of mainly sunny weather - and some scorching days - and the balcony has responded by leaping into flower.

Watering in hope has turned into something quite different.

The constants are the clanging of the watering can in the sink, the accompanying rush and gurgle of water, and the quenching glint of it as it falls on grateful ground.
