Another remote and difficult site. Overlooking Eigg and Rum - so it’s all about the view and touching the ground lightly (to avoid all those rocks!) I’m beginning to dream of a flat, well drained site with nice firm soils, easy vehicle access and a nearby builder’s merchant!

Penguin Cafe at Queens Cross Church…this should be good!

This project was a special one for me – a retirement home at Monachyle Mhor. It carries echoes of the house I once designed for my own parents retirement . These projects are never just buildings; they can become acts of devotion and a form of guardianship. They are always a family endeavour, a joint enterprise that I’m privileged to participate in. They are undertaken with a sense of care and duty – built not only to shelter, but to protect. (thanks to @ rcphotographist for the great images)

It was ten years ago that I left a nice secure job in and set up on my own, I had just become a father for the first time and I thought that the best way to spend as much time with my child as possible would be to set my own hours and work around my family…with not much more of a plan than that. 10 years on and one child is now 10 and her little brother is nearly 8 and there have been a lot of changes. But I’m still mostly working in the National Park, still designing and building things to bring people a bit o joy and I’m always balancing much more towards “life” than “work”. Here’s to the next 10 years and a big thank you to everyone that has helped along the way.

Not a massively productive day for me today…but take your chances when you can! 🍁

An autumnal look at Bothag na Sroine - our off grid Bothy in the woods. The surrounding trees are now affecting the solar’s performance so we’re just identifying what we need to trim to try and get as much battery charging on these sunny autumn days

I have some pictures of a great new project to post - but they’ll have to wait as Monachyle Beag was bathed in autumn sunlight and I had to divert the drone!

I love an A frame - not sure if it’s the sheer simplicity of it, the mostly 70s vibe you get from them or if it’s the compromises inherent with such a restrictive geometry. Anyway, I’ve refurbished and extended a few as they were fashionable 40 years ago so most need a lot of care to bring up to current hospitality standards. This one is a little sad - but soon to be reborn. It’s in an amazing location in the Trossachs and the initial plan was to flatten three old lodges and build something new - however with the glacial speed of statutory authorities and the issues still arising from NPF4 - refurbishing is the way and this this little gem is getting a new lease of life. (BTW I’ve dropped enough hints - we’d love to do a new A Frame for someone!!)

working his magic in Dualt Mor today - big house with a lot of blank walls means all of my art collection is scattered through this 300sqM house - the Dan O’Neill didn’t make the grade…”too religious”apparently…these West Coasters are very touchy!
