Cameron Brown Architects is a new design-focused architecture practice based in rural Perthshire working across the United Kingdom. Our practice ethos of LANDSCAPE, PLACE and SPACE is at the heart of every project we carry out and with every design we aim to:
- Respond to and preserve our LANDSCAPE through conscientious and sustainable design.
- Affirm and enhance our sense of PLACE by responding

to the specific nature of a site and its surroundings.
- Create lasting SPACES that can meet our Client’s future, as well as current, needs through careful and considered design. Be it a one-off home or premises, dream extension, or simply making a property more energy efficient and sustainable, we support our clients at each stage of their project, from the first sketch to the final handover. We offer a full range of traditional architectural services including design, planning, technical design, and contract administration as well as more general work such as architectural consultancy, master planning and interior design.

We have some exciting work in the pipeline for 2026 - including several conservation projects to get designing, and not to mention a few interesting retrofit projects that will be starting on site in early spring.

In the meantime we have taken a moment to reflect on the past year and the year ahead before we return to work next week.

Wishing all our client's and collaborators a happy and successful year ahead!

An interior render of one of our latest projects to get planning approval - this simple contemporary extension in rural Perthshire will involve the complete re-model of the principal level of this 1980's detached home, developing a modern layout that will work for a busy and growing young family.

We recently secured planning approval to extend and alter a lovely semi-detached villa on the edge of Kinross. The original Victorian property had been altered and extended many times over the centuries. Our proposals include repairs and remedial work to the existing building fabric, as well as a simple single-story kitchen-dining extension to bring the home together into a cohesive whole and offer a bright, open space for modern family life.

We have recently been playing around with some 3D printing and have found it can be quite handy for initial massing / site strategy work.

Here we modelled the existing site in white, which included an original cottage and the ruins of an old barn with lovely feature archway. The new proposed extension, terrace and workshop are modelled in black.

In this case our client took a different and equally interesting option forward for planning, but we really enjoyed the relationship between the existing ruins and new forms in this one - we also kept an old fire place in situ as a possible fire pit!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Our current project in West Lothian requires the complete reconstruction of two chimneys that were in a serious state of disrepair due to decades of water ingress and lack of ventilation.

The chimneys have been completely re built, pointed and lined. Here you can see the new sandstone blocks of the restored chimney stack, some of which reclaimed, mocked up on the ground before being lifted in to place.

Some brilliant workmanship from who have cut and finished all of this stone on site and by hand, completely like for like to the original masonry.

And it’s bloody cold out there!

Exploratory sketches for an early project. The brief was to adapt and improve a function space within a former orangery and boiler room set within a beautiful C Listed walled garden, yet had little meaningful connection to their surroundings.

For this scheme I was thinking about restoring an axis and vista through the space, restoring and reinforcing the connection between the existing orangery entrance on one side of the wall, and the existing walled garden layout on the other.

I like to do quick loose sketches like these at early stages of a project - rough and ready, but still the quickest way to get out ideas and explore different trains of thought - although sometimes they can be a bit cryptic so seldom shared with clients or posted on here but just shows a bit more of our process.

We are back to it this week with lots of exciting work to get started on. But first we have reflected a bit on the past year, how we plan to approach the year ahead, and some trends we expect to see.

Sustainability - It is without question that architects think about sustainability on a daily basis and it has been top of the agenda for most of our clients, particularly due to rising energy bills. But the construction industry is also the second biggest source of air pollution in the UK, and contributes to 40% of the UK's carbon emissions. So this year we are going on a deep dive into sustainability, exploring new materials, and products, how they are made, where they come from, and when and where they will be appropriate and best value for our clients and their projects.

Don't Move Improve - Sustainability is not just about energy but how we use the resources we have - that can be a building. This year we expect to see people continuing to want to improve their existing homes as opposed to moving house, or tackling a new build. We are committed to helping our clients create their forever homes - unleashing the potential of existing buildings is what we love doing.

Artificial Intelligence - It is hard to tell how AI will continue to change the world of architecture over the next year. And although it is something we have experimented with, as a practice we are of the view that AI does not yet have a useful place in our work - at least until it can do the more mundane tasks! We research, write, draw and design every project under our own steam - each project being a combination of our knowledge and experience, analysis of each individual site, and our client’s unique brief and requirements. Of course we use computers and make digital models - but we also draw by hand - and we certainly don't plan on handing our favourite part of the process over to an algorithm - designing!

We hope you join us on our journey through 2025 and wish a happy and successful new year to our clients, colleagues and collaborators!

Sometimes the simplest projects can be complex - last year we obtained consents for this seemingly straightforward boot room that was in fact designed to the very last detail to negotiate a number of serious site constraints, including difficult levels, existing services, and a culverted stream that fed a former mill lade.

The existing building has parts that allegedly go back to the 16th century so in this case a completely sympathetic approach to the design was taken. Looking forward to seeing things progress on site this year.
