Apologies to our faithful. We seem to have a website issue this afternoon/evening with access denied to all. It is hoped that normal service will be resumed later tomorrow (Tuesday). To quote Miranda's mother, "bear with".

For those of you following us, but perhaps not on our mailing list, we wish gently to break the news that we are now in the closing months of our last season ahead of retirement. In the absence of finding a new owner for the business, when the last bud has broken in Spring, we shall be closing our doors for the last time. Until then, it is business as usual and you can see what stock is still available by browsing our webshop, giving us a call, or downloading the latest full availability list which will soon be uploaded to our website at www.weasdale.com. There won't be a closing down sale as we have a plan for any remaining stock but, once something has gone, it has gone.

We've uploaded a drone's eye view of the nurseries, supplementing the one we already have for helping visitors to the nurseries find us. Not sure why, but some sections have become corrupted in the upload, but we hope you enjoy a glimpse of our workplace and the glorious setting. We were doing some thinning of cluttered spaces at the weekend and from an old wages ledger, came across this interesting insight into a past era. A scale for wages for children down to the age of 9. Any takers, kids? There's plenty of weeding to be done. (For those not brought up with pounds/shillings/pence, 1/5 is 1 shilling and 5 pennies per hour or 7.5 (new) pence per hour in modern currency. A 9 year old was being offered the equivalent of 2.5p per hour.)

Looks like it could be graduation day today. The wrenlings are crowding at the nest's entrance and appear to have new suits of feathers to fit them for their new world outside. We probably won't be there for them when they go, so shall simply say arrivederci now.

After a busy season, the packing shed is gradually getting sorted out and a few remaining quarantined rootballed Scots Pines have been moved out into the ground. In their midst, a wren had quietly built its nest and, hunkered down inside, we find a brood of fledglings. The parents are still flitting in and out with a constant stream of takeaway food for the youngsters, so the disappearance of most of their cover doesn't seem to have deterred them. Fingers crossed for a successful fledge in about a week's time.

COVID-19 update. We have been remarkably fortunate in that we have been able to continue functioning more or less as normal throughout the COVID pandemic, as our carriers have soldiered on with fluctuating driver availability and delivered our customer orders right up to the end of the bare-root season and the odd order since. The only difference has been that we have requested customers not to visit us, other than to collect pre-ordered plants and this remains the case until further notice. We understand that the R-rate in Cumbria is still above the national figure and we shall be looking for this to reduce comfortably below 1.0 before relaxing our guard.

What a remarkable state of flux we all find ourselves in with the inexorable advance of COVID-19 and what wonderful flashes of creativity are brightening up our days from all quarters. 100% proof human spirit! Here at Weasdale, it is business pretty much as usual. We already work in an isolating environment, our men can work with hundreds of yards of social distancing if necessary and our customers are at considerable arms' length, so on we march. Not much of this lifting season left now but still time for last orders. Here are a few pictures taken a moment ago. Can you tell it's about 5 degrees C out there?

Why doesn't my holly have any berries? A very common question and, if you don't know the answer but read our new blog article on the topic, you may be able to hold forth on the topic in the pub tonight. And explain why the holly doesn't actually bear berries, but drupes. Read all about it here: https://weasdale.com/Blog/30/The%20sexing%20of%20Hollies
