In 1926 James Cargill Dowell (Da) moved from Aberdeen to Orkney with his family. He was employed as a letter cutter by Hitchison of Aberdeen and worked at Dowell's corner (the yard). In 1936 his son Jim (Grandad) joined him and business thrived. Mr Hitchison retired in 1955 and sold the business to Jim. In 1963 Jim's son Stewart started working at the yard until he moved south for a spell. Jim's y

oungest son John(Dad) started work in 1975 and John's son Malcolm joined the business in 1991. They were all fully qualified letter cutters and Malcolm put in a whopping 6 year apprenticeship to qualify in all aspects of the trade. In 2001 Robertson Memorials took over the business although the Dowells continued to run it. Sadly John died in 2012 and Malcolm continued to take care of day to day business along with his Auntie Jennifer (Stewart's wife) and brother Mark. Jennifer then retired in 2016 and Malcolm's wife Eileen took over the running of the office.
