🦡 Badger Survey Season is Here!

Did you know a badger survey can be carried out at any time of year? However, the best time is between February and April when badgers are most active and vegetation cover is lower — making signs like setts, tracks, and paths much easier to identify.

If your development project could impact badgers, a professional survey, report, and mitigation plan may be required.

Our experienced ecologists can help you navigate ecological constraints and keep your project moving forward while protecting wildlife.

We were delighted to host Iyla, a third-year student at Leeds Beckett University, following the college’s speed mentoring event.

With a strong interest in biophilic design, Iyla developed a thoughtful hard and soft landscape proposal for a children’s hospital unit in West Yorkshire, balancing experiential and functional needs. She also supported the team on a live project, contributing to a landscape assessment and site appraisal and gaining insight into the early stages of the design process.

We wish Iyla every success in the remainder of her studies and hope to work with her again in the future.

🌿✨ Site visit in Coventry last Friday!

We are incredibly proud to see how seamlessly landscape and ecology have come together on this scheme. A thoughtful blend of retained vegetation with newly introduced mixed native scrub, native hedges, tree planting, and wildflower seeding — all working together to deliver meaningful BNG gains.

Even better seeing the two drive-thru sites designed by The Harris Partnership fully integrated into this landscape-led approach. We’re really looking forward to seeing these young trees establish and transform the space in the coming years. 🌳💚

After a season of dawn and dusk surveys our ecologists would like to join the bats and hibernate for the winter, however, plenty of other survey work to be undertaken. Our ecology team can still assist on daytime surveys for habitats, badger otter, wintering birds and bat aerial tree inspections.

Did you know that the striking pink-and-purple Himalayan balsam is one of the UK’s most problematic invasive plants? 🌸

Originally introduced as an ornamental species, it now spreads rapidly along rivers and streams, crowding out native biodiversity. It’s listed under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the NNSS Species of Special Concern.

If you have it in your garden, you’re not committing an offence – but it’s strongly advised to control or remove it to prevent further spread.

At Smeeden Foreman, we’re committed to raising awareness of how non-native species impact our landscapes – and how small actions can make a big difference. 🌍

Our ecologists have enjoyed getting out in the field recently for botanical identification sessions to help upskill juniors and experienced staff alike. Robust habitat appraisals are essential for capturing baseline data which ecologists use to inform Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments. 🍃🌻🌿

Late night bat surveys in full swing! Our team are very busy recording bats using a range of specialist equipment including detectors and infra-red cameras.

At the start of the season our ecologists took interested staff and students on a bat walk to introduce them to survey techniques in preparation for the months ahead. 🦇
