We have created three chalk scrapes in an area of chalk grassland to help establish native Juniper shrubs. Despite being one of the first trees to colonise Britain after the Ice Age, an estimated 70% of the Juniper population has been lost. Urgent conservation work began 10 years ago to bring Juniper back from the brink of extinction. Juniper seedlings will only germinate in bare chalk soil. Let’s hope these scrapes work and we see them back on the Lambourn Downs.

Now that the frosts have cleared we can continue to plant mixed native hedges. This customer has decided to plant an incredible 3,500m of hedges. These new hedge lines not only provide feed and shelter to farmland birds but also capture rainfall leading to a reduction in water run off and flooding. We have used a tractor mounted machine to cut through the ground which makes us faster and more efficient. All hedges protected by new livestock fencing.

Dew ponds are crucial to our wildlife on the Berkshire Downlands where standing water is a scarce commodity. Dew ponds were originally created to provide water to livestock however as this industry has declined in recent years so have the dew ponds. Despite their name, dew ponds are actually fed by rainfall and the ones we have created have been lined which makes them strong and durable and won’t crack if the ponds dry out in the summer. Hopefully it won’t be long until the edges naturally regenerate with grasses and wildflowers.
