LAST POST – It’s been lovely to share a small selection of the past 40 years commissions during this last month. If there are any we’ve missed that you’d like to see again, then simply drop a message in the comment section below.

We’re looking forward to announcing a celebration of Maggy and the studio’s work in late Summer. Stay tuned.

Day 22 – “Design is everything. I like to play. I like to exaggerate rather than aim for the naturalistic. That’s how I find the essence of something” - Maggy Howarth.

Standing in the centre of Bournemouth (UK), this large commission sees Neptune surrounded by mermaids and a supporting cast of sea creatures. Maggy’s love of playful design gives this mosaic incredible energy and spirit.

Day 21 – Longer days are coming and this commission is a celebration of light and renewal.
The Roman design of the Sun at the heart of this mosaic features a number of times across Maggy’s designs.
The organic flickering shape of the rays combined with the warm terracotta, reds and honey-toned pebbles create an instinctive feeling of warmer seasons around the corner. The neighbouring flowers - some only just emerging - provide a wonderful curve and bend set against the harder lines of the octagonal border.

Day 20 – A Coat of Arms or Family Crest has often featured in design briefs over the years and the mosaic at Cholmondeley Castle (Cheshire,UK) is an interesting example. Certain design elements lend themselves beautifully for the pebble medium but others require re-invention into a more figurative expression like the Wolf and Griffin here.

You might also be able to spot a host of other symbols - regimental insignia, military drums, pheasants, foxes and pedigree bulls - which were ultimately fired as ceramics and cast into the mosaic.
The colour palette of the pebbles echoes the striking  Gothic revival castle. You can read more about this commission on our website. https://www.maggyhowarth.co.uk/commissions/cholmondeley

Day 19 –
Consistently listed as one of the UK’s finest small gardens, Shepherd House garden created by Lord and Lady Frazer contains a beautiful floral mosaic underneath a fine arbor entranceway.

The pebbles are slightly larger than we typically use and the rounded nature of the background stones make the flowing lines of the Tulip really stand out. The direction of the design leads the eye on to the fantastic Gerald Laing statue above the pond.
Thank you to for the beautiful photo of our work.

Day 18 – Pebbles are such a beautiful material to work with but naturally have their limitations in terms of the ability to capture subjects in a realistic way. Maggy often sought playfulness and exaggeration in her designs believing this was how to get to the essence of something.  This Highland cattle design is one such example, somehow conveying the spirit and vigour of the animal through clever colour grading and flow lines.

Day 17 – This mosaic is one of a number in the town of Beaconsfield (UK) where they have a fantastic mosaic trail.

A flowing knot pattern weaves around stylised leaves and in the centre a simple tight spiral of white quartz.

Around the edge, running horses bring movement to the composition and point to the town’s historical place on the London to Oxford Stagecoach route.

Day 16 – At Kylestrome in the Scottish Highlands, a stone’s throw from Loch Glendhu, sits this extraordinary courtyard commission based on the ancient Hindu Sri Yantra symbol.

Formed from nine interlocking triangles, the Sri Yantra is one of the most complex sacred geometries in the world - a symbolic map of the cosmos and the union of opposing energies. Swipe to see close ups!

Day 15 – Created for Jonathan Denby’s Victorian Aviary Garden at the 2010 RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

The team were given special permission to pick some of the pebbles from a private beach in Anglesey which were combined with glass beads and the semi precious amazonite and lapis lazuli in the Peacock’s plumage.

Following the show, this 12m2 mosaic was transported and relayed at Jonathan’s home in the Lake District (UK) looking back over the bay towards Hilltop where it was made.

Day 14- The final inspection! Here is a great photo of Maggy in the yard at Hilltop reviewing the scallop shell mosaic commissioned by Lord and Lady Heseltine for the magnificent Thenford Gardens and Arboretum in Northamptonshire.

As you can see from the second image, the mosaic was installed as a shallow pool at the end of a beautiful long rill. The meticulous colour fade and contrasting arrangement of background pebbles create a wonderful 3D effect along the edge of the shell.
