The tiny, delicate flowers of the purple deadnettle, (Lamium purpureum) often coat bees in their red pollen as they squeeze through the flowers to collect nectar. The deadnettle does not have stinging hairs like the true nettles, and is soft and downy to the touch. It is usually small, but occasionally reaches 30cm (1ft) tall. The young leaves are edible and the plant can sometimes bloom during mild winters, providing a seasonally rare source of nectar
