Herefordshire Chestnut Fencing

We supply and install a variety of traditional and rustic styles of Cleft Chestnut fence and garden products throughout Herefordshire, Shropshire and the Midlands. All our fencing is made from locally coppiced Sweet Chestnut, which is well known as being in

credibly durable and long lasting without using chemical preservatives. We cleave (split) along the grain rather than sawing through the fibres to retain the strength and character of the tree. From single stakes to bulk orders, we can sell you the materials or design and install your fence for you. We make chestnut paling, domestic, estate and agricultural fencing, as well as selling rustic chestnut poles, rose arches, trellis and garden furniture. With many years experience of fencing, coppicing and forestry, we can offer a variety of services for the woodland, estate or garden owner. We have the equipment and a qualified team for most jobs. Our clients include The National Trust, The Nature Trust, Woodland Trust and many more satisfied customers. We are always happy to answer your questions about Chestnut fencing, or using natural materials for your garden projects. Call us to discuss your needs, ideas, prices or just for a chat! WE DIDNT MAKE THIS.

This is Gädsgård fencing (pronounced yarsgord). It's very popular in mid Sweden, it's the most common fence we've seen over here. here's a few fun facts I've found out about it.

1/it's a traditional type of fence and any house surrounded by it is considered lucky. There are several different styles depending on the region or maker. The style in the photos is Leksand. The government set a standard for the fencing which was tested by a soldier in full kit being able to climb on it.

2/it's made from slow grown spruce, which is usually harvested in Jamtland, count the growth rings. They are cut with clearing saws as part of forest management. The bottoms of the poles are charred for durability. The fence is held together with twisted spruce branches, which have been split then steamed to be pliable. Once it's cooled the twists are very hard. Further north they use split sections rather than poles.

3/it last for upto 60 years! This really blew our minds. British spruce is not at all durable and our soggy climate rots anything. The frozen winters and generally dry summer is kind on wood. I don't think it would work using uk timber.

4/it's everywhere, yet there are very few makers. So they must be quick at it and have good access to material. I'll find some links to some of the firms we've come across and pop them in the comments.
