The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) is a set of regulations in the United Kingdom that aims to protect people from the risks of fires, explosions, and other hazards associated with dangerous substances. The regulations apply to any workplace where dangerous substances are present, handled, or stored, and they require employers to take appropriate measures to control the risks associated with these substances.

Under DSEAR, employers must assess the risks associated with dangerous substances in their workplace and implement appropriate measures to control these risks. This may include measures such as providing appropriate protective equipment and training for employees, implementing appropriate storage and handling procedures, and carrying out regular risk assessments to identify and control any new hazards that may arise. Employers must also ensure that appropriate emergency procedures are in place in case of an incident involving dangerous substances.

DSEAR applies to a wide range of dangerous substances, including flammable liquids, gases, and dusts, as well as explosives and oxidising agents. It is important for employers to be aware of the requirements of DSEAR and to ensure that they are in compliance with these requirements to protect the health and safety of their employees.

What are the benefits of an intercom system?

☎️ Improved communication: Intercom systems allow people to communicate with each other quickly and efficiently, without having to physically go to the same location. This can save time and improve productivity.

πŸ” Increased security: Intercom systems can be used to control access to a building or facility, allowing only authorised personnel to enter. This can increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access.

πŸ•’ Enhanced convenience: Intercom systems can be used to remotely control doors, gates, and other access points, allowing people to enter and exit a building or facility with ease.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ”§ Easy installation: Many intercom systems are easy to install and require minimal wiring, making them a convenient and cost-effective solution for improving communication and security.

πŸ“ˆ Flexibility: Intercom systems can be customised to meet the specific needs of a building or facility and can be easily expanded or modified as needed.

Single Path VS. Dual Path Monitoring

Single Path Signalling System
In the event of the business being compromised such as a burglary or break-in, the case of a telephone line being cut, an alarm is activated at the ARC.

Dual-Path Signalling System
The dual-path signalling system works similarly to the single path in that it sends a signal to the ARC activating an alarm. However, if for some reason this is not possible and fails, for example, down to a cable being cut, the signals are sent using the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). Some building insurances may state that you need to have Dual-Path monitoring to be covered so this is worth looking into.

Category P

P1 - Detection installed everywhere in the
building including any voids.

corresponding passage areas but not individual
rooms.

L3 - Similar to L4 detection is placed along all escape
routes leading from the interior of the premises
to fire exits.

L2 - These alarms have detection in high-risk rooms
and escape routes leading to fire exits, L2
provides advance warning of the existence of a

The 3 Main types of fire alarm systems

1. Conventional Fire Alarm:
Suitable for smaller spaces and lower risk properties, conventional fire alarms divide a premises into zones, while all zones are continuously monitored if a fire was to occur the
alarm panel will be able to identify in which zone the fire started.

2. Addressable Fire Alarm:
This type of alarm is designed for larger, higher risk premises, an addressable fire alarm uses detection devices with unique ID's (similar to serial numbers used to identify mobile phones and other devices). By using these IDs it is able to identify problems
not only by which zone but the location within that zone.

3. Wireless Fire Alarm:
A wireless fire alarm is one of the latest designs that can be installed without much structural disruption, they work and perform in the same way as an addressable alarm but without the need for cabling to the panel.

Physical access control systems are used by businesses and also in some residential homes to control who can obtain access to the building, and also into specific areas within that building. Designed to keep intruders out it can also be a useful tool for organisations to secure rooms for colleagues who do not have the clearance to enter and also keep those who can, safe.

Installing an access control system can be a cost-effective solution for businesses. For example, if an employee loses their keys it could result in you having to replace all your locks. However, if you have a keyless entry system it is much easier and more efficient to reprogram the system or replace a missing card. Access control systems in many cases will remove the need for manual security staff which is another cost-saving.

With an access control system, everything can be done remotely, you can monitor your business even when you are not on site. As most access control systems are cloud-based you are able to change access levels from anywhere that has an internet connection and even temporarily unlock doors for authorised personnel.

From 1st October 2006 the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires any non-domestic premises to carry out a fire risk assessment, including measures to reduce or eliminate the risk of fire, and identify persons at risk. You could be fined or go to prison if you do not follow fire safety regulations.

The objective of a fire risk assessment is to evaluate the level of risk a premises faces. By conducting a fire risk assessment, the assessor will be able to determine areas for concern, the likelihood of a fire breaking out as well as any individuals most at risk. A fire risk assessment will also highlight any missing equipment and faulty equipment in a business’ fire safety setup.

A few pictures taken during a recent CCTV installation at one of our business customers premises!

Fish eye cameras are a very beneficial addition to business security particularly in large commercial units where ceilings are high and there is a lot of open ground to cover. They offer a cost effective solution with the ability to reduce or in some cases completely eliminate any blind spots providing a 360 degree view.

30 seconds. It takes all of 30 seconds for a manageable fire to turn into something that is dangerous and fast-moving. Synthetic materials, wood, wall hangings and countless other factors can accelerate the spread, giving even less time to stop the fire before it spreads.

After about a minute, smoke β€” the largest cause of fire-related deaths β€” begins to fill the room, spreading as rapidly as the flames. It takes, on average, about five minutes for an entire home to become completely engulfed.

The top 5 leading causes of fires in the home are
1. Cooking – The top cause of fires in homes accounting for 48% of reported residential fires in the UK.
2. Heating (namely portable heaters) – Portable heaters have spatial requirements, and these are not generally followed but they are not to be confused with recommendations, these requirements have been set out by manufactures.
3. Electrical Fires – The most common causes of electrical fires consist of faulty sockets/appliances, light fixtures and fittings, Extension leads and outdated wiring systems.
4. Smoking – Careless disposal of ci******es especially when smoking indoors is one of the biggest fire risks.
5. Candles - Candle fires result in more than 300 casualties each year nationally, and around a third of all fires started by candles resulted in a death or injury.

Essentially anything that plugs in and/or heats up has the potential to catch fire in house. Since there will always be fire hazards, the best defence against these hazards are fire alarms which are installed by a home security company.

Alarms are one of the most convenient and affordable ways to protect your home, business and valuables from thieves and can offer you valuable peace of mind.

Residential
Burglar alarms can be installed with ease, and they provide an effective visual deterrent to criminals. They are triggered when either an electrical circuit has been broken or motion is detected near your property. The loud siren or bell is an unmistakable signal that an individual has entered your property, stopping them in their tracks and allowing you to alert the police.

Commercial
Intruder alarms are the most widely used security system and are often mandatory in commercial insurance policy contracts. Solent Fire and Security can offer a variety of intruder alarms from bells-only, to fully monitored systems, wired or wireless. Whether you wish to install a new system or upgrade an existing system we will work with you to provide the most effective solution.

Should you Install a Fire Alarm or Smoke Detectors Yourself?

There are DIY fire alarm systems on the market that you can install yourself. The most common type of alarm is a smoke detector. We do not supply these except as part of a complete safety system. You can buy them easily at DIY stores.

Most responsible home owners will, at the the very least, have smoke detectors in the hall ways. They can be a nuisance as smoke from frying food can set them off. Smoke detectors are not suitable for kitchens and bathrooms as they are likely to be set off in normal smoke and steam. Heat detectors are better for these rooms.

DIY smoke alarms are better than nothing but be sure to check them regularly.

The average home usually has only smoke or heat detectors. This is because the occupants are usually no more than one room away from where the fire starts and a smoke alarm plus a loud shout from one person is enough to alert the rest of the household.

Larger homes spread over a wide area that may have out buildings also, could suffer massive damage before anyone is aware. The more a fire takes hold, the harder it will be to put out.

Larger homes and estates, apartment blocks and residential homes such as care homes, would use an alarm system similar to that used in commercial premises.
