We are delighted that Bracken Lodge has been shortlisted for a Regional RIBA Yorkshire Award — marking the practice’s fourth consecutive year of recognition from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Bracken Lodge stands as a testament to an exceptional long‑term collaboration with its client, with whom we have working since 2019. The project reimagines and transforms an existing 1950s dwelling into a highly accessible home that seamlessly blends sustainability, functionality, and architectural quality.

From the outset, accessibility and adaptability formed the heart of the brief. Working closely with the client, the design team carefully considered specific access needs and explored how the internal layout could evolve to support the client’s day‑to‑day experience. The remodel now features level thresholds throughout, polished concrete floors that continue from inside to outside for smooth wheelchair movement, accessible bathrooms and kitchens, generous open‑plan spaces, and the introduction of a lift and dedicated gym. Integrated lighting, heating, and audio‑visual technology give the client intuitive, independent control of their environment.

Environmental sustainability was equally central to the project’s ambition. The original gas boiler has been replaced with air‑source heat pumps serving new underfloor heating; a south‑facing photovoltaic array now generates on‑site electricity; and a whole‑house mechanical ventilation and heat‑recovery system improves energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Enhanced thermal fabric performance and the addition of an EV‑ready car port further contribute to the home’s long‑term sustainability.

Bracken Lodge provides a compelling case study in transforming an existing dwelling to meet the highest standards of both accessibility and environmental design. The outcome is a warm, light‑filled, and spatially generous home that demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can enhance both lifestyle and sustainability without compromise.

Thank you to all who have been involved and best of luck to all shortlisted schemes

Centro Workshops is a prominent Victorian warehouse in Camden. Formerly a furniture depository, the building has been transformed into a contemporary workplace offering flexible office space, complete with a cafĂŠ, meeting rooms and modern end of journey facilities.

Our design sought to reveal and celebrate the building’s history by creating a cohesive visual narrative and opening up poorly connected spaces. The joinery celebrates furniture workshops with use of stacked timber and recycled materials which complement the exposed finishes of the building.

Key to the customer journey is a welcoming reception combined with cafe and meeting spaces. This gives occupants a hub to meet, lunch and relax away from the desk. Similarly, each floorplate has break-out kitchens for coffee, lunch and informal meetings.

The journey through the building is celebrated and embraces exposed structure of the building.

The top floor(s) are combined with light-wells and a mezzanine floor, giving a dynamic and light filled ‘hero-unit’ with rooftop terrace and cityscape vistas.

ArkleBoyce delivered Architecture and Interior Design for the project, as well as both Principal Designer roles.

Huge thanks go out to our amazing client and close-knit design team with whom we always enjoy collaborating, and without, it would not be possible.

As another busy year comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on all that we’ve achieved — and what an incredible year it’s been.
A huge, heartfelt thank you to our amazing clients for trusting us with bringing your visions to life, and to our talented team and collaborators who work tirelessly to design and deliver meaningful architecture. As we wrap up our 10th year in practice, we feel truly fortunate to be involved in such inspiring projects.
We’re looking forward to a well‑earned rest over the holidays, ready to return in the new year with energy, enthusiasm, and excitement. With fantastic schemes on the drawing board, others progressing on site, and new opportunities still ahead, 2026 is already shaping up to be something special.
Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.

Marygate is deep retrofit of a neoclassical house on one of York’s most historic streets. Tucked away behind stone boundary walls and adjacent to Museum Gardens, the site is as well positioned, as it is hidden.
Our clients, were ambitious with the brief, and bold in their choice of property. Whilst the house required significant vision on their part, they have played a significant part in developing a scheme which embraces the site’s seclusion, embraces family living and shows off their eye for detail.
A pavilion style brick extension reaches out into the garden, a blend of solid brickwork and full height glazing which forms an open plan kitchen and family dining space. The elegant glazing provides dual views towards an arrival courtyard, and the garden.
Various interventions to the façade and fenestration give the house a contemporary feel, whilst retaining a sense of the original dwelling.
Internally the house is linked by a strong axis on the main entrance hall, linking the main living spaces and staircase to the first floor.
At first floor level, windows were increased in size, with a large glazed screen and timber opening leaf for ventilation. This increases natural light, creates a stronger connection to the garden, whilst the master en-suite enjoys views of the Minster.
Materials are considered and robust, with a polished concrete floor uniting most areas of the ground floor. A concrete worktop with pebbles from family holidays is a particularly personal touch, whilst artwork from Georgie (a contemporary landscape artist) and the couple’s collection add character and meaning to the spaces. A timber screen conceals a hidden a pantry positioned off the kitchen, meaning the space functions whilst retaining a sense of calm.
The best projects unite the client, the brief, and the site. This project shows what can be achieved when a thoughtful, disciplined design process is applied.

We are hugely proud and honoured that Clayworth has won a award. A huge thank you to our very special client, wonderful contractor and talented design team.

Words from the RIBA Jury;

The couple who commissioned this fully accessible modern home describe the project as ‘transformational’. The client had found it increasingly challenging, becoming almost impossible, to look after his disabled wife in their old home.

During the jury visit he was keen to extol the virtues of writing down a clear brief. This has served them very well, as they seem to have achieved everything they aspired to – living comfortably, albeit with a carer on site but independently located.

The flint-clad house, which uses the site of a previous 1970s cottage, sits down low and is virtually invisible from the entrance until further down the drive, which is surrounded by informal landscaping.

Punctuated by a prominent chimney, the house lines one side of the entrance yard, and has a large porte-cochère at right angles from the front door. This space provides an elegant screen to a courtyard garden and is linked to the carer’s accommodation.

Everything from this point on is about comfortably handling a disability. Getting out of the car is sheltered, and the entrance hall provides a singular linear route off which the open-plan living space, bedrooms and bathrooms are all easily accessible and enjoy garden views.

The kitchen-dining-living room is a generous and sophisticated space surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass, well shaded by a simple monolithic overhang. Electric solar blinds for all windows are hidden in the ceiling.

There are three large sliding panels which enable the space to open up to an outside barbecue area and walkway that doubles as an exercise path for the client’s disabled wife.

Nothing about these rooms reduces quality in the effort to ensure accessibility.

This is a house totally at peace in its setting, delivering generous, flexible and accessible space to a family who wanted something special – and, working collaboratively with ArkleBoyce, got exactly what they wanted.
