The hassle and pain of growing and looking after edibles when you are too ill to look after yourself properly all becomes worth it a few weeks on when you bite into a perfectly ripe tomato and are practically floored by its burst of flavor! (I didn't grow the olives or chickpeas). If any of you bought tomato or squash plants from us earlier this year, I'd love to know how you're getting on with them.

Plant of the week! I'm a sucker for a philodendron and these P.melanochrysums are beauts. They're pretty easy to look after but they do like some humidity so if you can't put them in a bathroom or kitchen make sure to mist them or place on a gravel/water tray.

If Calatheas are more your thing then we've just got a mixed batch of those too. But if you've oblnly got a tiny space to fill, the ever popular purple leaved Gynara are back in stock.

What a palaver... Ridiculous for someone who owns a plant shop and who's first love is gardening, but I am extremely allergic to pollen. So summer is really hard. I've had two paramedic call outs and near misses with A&E, am drugged up to the eyeballs with antihistamine and steroids and confined to indoors. To say it's frustrating is understating it by a mile. But Amaya and the team at HEART are keeping things ticking over, and the plants are fully stocked this morning. In the meantime, I'm pleased to say that roses don't have much pollen, so I've been able to bring one indoors. It's from an English shrub rose - Queen of Sweden I think - and is a little pocket of joy in my indoor prison! Bear with us if the shop isn't quite as on the ball as usual.

This May is a big month here at The Green Yard. We have two anniversaries coming up. The first is The Green Yard’s third birthday. Or at least, third birthday owned by me. It’s a pretty big deal for me, because they’ve not been the easiest three years. I originally took on the shop to give my late husband, the lovely Steve, something to focus on and to distract him from his horrible illness. It worked. He was absolutely thrilled to be a shop owner. It had been a bit of a pipe dream for him to own a shop, having been brought up over his parent’s shop. I’m so glad The Green Yard helped him achieve that ambition. The second anniversary is not so great, it’s the first anniversary of Steve’s death. If I’m honest I’m struggling a bit, possibly more now than I have done for the past year. It’s a funny thing grief isn’t it. It’s certainly not straightforward.

But we do have cause to celebrate.  The HEART Centre, where Steve was facilities manager for years, then volunteer and then Green Yard owner and where he is much missed, has set up a brand new art gallery space in his honour.  The gallery is in the Shire Oak room (otherwise known as ‘the hall’) and is called The Steve Trattles Gallery - obvs! .  And…. the first exhibition, in celebration of our three years, will be a collection of work by some of the artists and designers featured in our shop.  The grand opening of the new gallery will be on Sunday 11th May – yes that’s a Sunday – when HEART is open to welcome marathon watchers and runners into the building, as well as everyone else of course.  Do come and see us if you can.

I've been round the garden looking for pink blue and white. With a bit of photo editing I've just about managed it. Why? Because sometimes being an apolitical little plant and gift shop just isn't enough. The Green Yard believes absolutely that trans women are women and like the HEART Centre where we are based, we strive to be a welcoming and safe place for all genders, sexes and sexualities. Come and see us whether you want a plant or a chat or just a little sit down. We're still just a little plant shop, but we're also part of our community, and we want it to be inclusive, fair and kind. Much love ###

It's still too early to be planting out all but the hardiest of annuals, but it's a great time to plant perennials, and we've had a fresh delivery of them this morning just in time for this lovely gardening weather. Amaya has put them all out already while I deal with a building project at home (arghhhh!). I may retreat to my own garden soon. I want to add some orange gems to a very blue border.

Hmmff, sorry, we've been a bit lax on our socials lately, (maybe I've been a bit distracted by my own garden?...) but we're still here in real life! Outdoor plants have started to arrive in the shop, in time for the next couple of weeks of good weather. What have you got planned in your garden this spring?
