Letting go of items you don’t use or particularly enjoy is very freeing. You’re making space for what you do like and will enjoy owning. Updating your home and allowing those things to go off and find a new home with people who like and want them is a game changer! Make space for your new vibe!

Popping books that are still in good condition to your local little library when you’ve finished with them is a great idea!

Have you ever wondered how clutter is measured?
This is a really useful tool. The Clutter Rating Scale helps to measure clutter in the home and to what extent clutter is affecting whether a room can be used for its true purpose. If you’re helping someone, this can really help!

As part of National Hoarding Awareness Week 2026, we're sharing some of the key tools and resources used by professionals working in this field.

One of those is the Clutter Image Rating scale - a visual assessment tool that uses photographs of rooms at varying levels of clutter, from completely clutter-free to very severely cluttered.

Because perceptions of clutter vary so widely between individuals, this scale provides a more consistent and objective way to assess severity. It can be used by practitioners across health, housing and social care, as well as by individuals themselves, to accurately communicate what is happening in a hoarded home.

As a general guide, clutter at level 4 or above may begin to impact daily life and could indicate that support would be beneficial.

Understanding the tools available is an important part of building a standardised approach to hoarding support - which is exactly what this year's campaign is focused on.

Today was an amazingly successful decluttering day!
I worked with a client who had very clear decluttering goals!
Changing the use of a room and thinking about what you really don’t need anymore is a game changer.
Thank you to
And to for helping with my client’s donations! You were great!
Do you have a project in mind? Perhaps decluttering first would be helpful?

Do you have too many cups? They do tend to multiply in the cupboard! Why not donate to this amazing place?

Do you have too many cups? They do tend to multiply in the cupboard!
Why not donate to this amazing place?

We’re putting out an urgent call for mugs! ☕💚

If you have any spare mugs, new or pre-loved taking up space in your cupboards, we would love to give them a new home.

You can drop them off at our main Crypt site on Great George Street (LS1 3BR), or at any of our charity shops. Just mention this post when you donate, and we’ll make sure they get to where they’re needed most.

Thank you so much for your continued support 🙌

Taking on any kind of project can be daunting!
I just wanted to show you what we did to help you believe that you can change the use of a room in your home. This room was a small double bedroom. Nice, cosy with a large double wardrobe. It had lots of reincarnations over the years but it became tired.
We now have little people who stay over when they visit, so another change was needed.
FIRST
Declutter
Sell the double bed, wall shelves bedside table and bedding on marketplace
Decide what was going to be reused
Decide on a colour to go with the curtains, as we loved them and I’d spent time blackout lining them😬.
Yellow seemed cheerful for a 7, 6, 4, 3 and 1 year old (all staying at different times) but three of them come tog, hence the little fold up bed!
Painting (took a while)
And best of all making a room we thought they’d love.
Goofy picture, chalk painted ()
Butterfly & dragonfly pictures plus wall shelves (FB marketplace)
My old foreign doll collection 🥰.
New toys, old toys, bunting art, books and repurposed draws full of art and craft materials .
We enjoyed this so much.
I just want to encourage people to look at the rooms in their house and if they’re not being used maybe give them a different purpose.
An office, sewing or craft room, mini gym or space to exercise. Perhaps even think if having a paying lodger.
Time changes our homes so instead of using them for storage why not have a new adventure?

Tuesday thought!

This is so true.

This is so true.

For many people, keeping items is closely tied to feeling safe or prepared for the future.

What can look like “clutter” from the outside is often connected to deeper concerns about loss, uncertainty, or going without.

Recognising these underlying motivations helps shift the conversation towards empathy and trauma-informed support 💙

They also explore how simple decisions - like choosing reusable wrapping or supporting someone’s hobby can create a more intentional, environmentally friendly Christmas.
