Making an allotment compost heap in hot dry weather.

The advice when making a compost heap with the right green and brown ratio is to add a layer of greens followed by a layer of browns and water well after the two layers have been added. Repeating the process until the heap is at the maximum size for turning using a fork.
However at present you may be faced with a growing and generous amount of greens and no water.
Today I opted to built the heap and will give it a good soaking when water becomes available.

Pond algae
With the summer on the way those with a pond in their garden can look forward to algae growing in and needing removal from their ponds.
An easy way of doing this is to wrap wire netting round the prongs og your composting fork.
Once removed the weeds can be added to the compost heap or bin, after being left by the ponf for a couple of dsys providing additional greens (nitrogen) and moisture at a time when the bin may be starting to dry.

Whitefly and wet bin.
I started filling my tumbler just after Christmas and now the first chamber is full and the second almost full.
It is much more difficult to maintain the correct moisture level and the contents are too wet and infested with white fly.
Last week more shredded oaper was added, today it is the turn of additional cardboard. If this does not reduce the moisture content it will either be sawdust or woodchip. Moiisture control is so easy with a pallet bin.but we will get on top of the problem.
