I’m passionate about all things related to carpentry and I’ve always enjoyed working with wood. I like to create and find the process very enjoyable and rewarding – I find myself in my ‘element’. Like

many home owners, I’ve had tradesmen over the years and I became increasingly frustrated with a lack of communication, poor quality of work – for their chosen ‘profession’ – and trust rapidly fading away. In 2022 – listening to my inner voice and to fulfil an ambition – I decided to embark on a second career in carpentry and joinery, leaving a professional role in the automotive industry to work with a furniture making business, and in 2023 work with a joinery and shopfitting company, and it 2024 setting up my own business.

Airing cupboard doors and shelving installed following a new boiler installation. The doors were made from 18mm MDF, cut to size and scribed for a good fit. Flush hinges were fitted along with generously sized handles to ensure smooth and easy operation. Finished in a durable white satin for a clean look.

Just finished a kitchen door repair for a customer. This door had suffered water damage and had started to come apart, which meant it wasn’t closing properly, and wasn’t looking great either. I carefully took the door apart, removed the raised panel, cleaned off the old glue, sanded, clamped and re-glued everything before refitting it. A job that required patience and a light touch – but very rewarding to bring it back to life!

I completed some fence repairs this week. First, three wooden posts had rotted through at ground level, so I installed concrete spurs and set them in place with Postcrete. I then used coach screws to secure each spur to the existing wooden post. Next, I built a new panel — with mortise-and-tenon joints for the frame — to screen off an open area. It was enjoyable work, using a mix of tools and techniques.

Just completed some repair work, putting my carpentry and joinery skills to use. The customer had suffered a leak which damaged the boxed-in skirting, so John reached out and asked if I could assist. After visiting, I ordered the necessary materials and matched the Ovolo profile to maintain the original look. Installing the new pieces was a bit tricky – there was some easing of the boxing in and fixing battens against the old cottage wall plaster (crikey!) – but I managed it. Just as a precaution, I also routed a channel in the back of the vertical section – so the pipes would not touch the board. It was satisfying work, a few photos from before, during, and after the job.

It’s been a while since I posted. I recently finished some repairs for a customer’s terraced entry gate. The gate wasn’t closing properly because of its fit and the movement of the wood – wood naturally expands and contracts with changing weather, which can cause sticking or misalignment. To fix the issue, I trimmed the edges of the door where it was sticking, allowing it to open and close smoothly. I also adjusted one of the hinges to improve alignment. The door has been finished in satin white to protect it and freshen it up. I added a new gate handle so the customer can easily pull the gate closed. The gate now closes securely and is much more convenient for the customer to use.

A handyman job I've just completed – installing a shelf made from a worktop offcut and fitting a round cable grommet in a customer’s kitchen. The shelf was installed to raise the new tumble dryer, providing easier access to the condenser.

Just completed the fitting of oak handrails with brass ends and antique black iron brackets for a customer in their cottage and granary. I made packers for the brackets (fitted where the stone walls were uneven), applied a clear satin varnish to the rails and touched up the screws to complete the finish. Really enjoyed the work and being in lovely old buildings.

A customer asked if I could improve the appearance of their bay window sill, before the installation of new shutter blinds (they inherited the condition of the sill when they moved in). The work included: removing old silicone between the sill and UPVC frame; sanding; filling; priming the wood; and applying new silicone. Some before and after photos.
