From Woodland to Workbench

Two small stools, shaped here in Shetland from carefully felled native
timber in a Welsh woodland — a gift of place, patience, and
friendship.

Shetland doesn’t have many trees of its own, so working with timber
that’s been tended, felled, and carried north by a friend feels like
receiving a blessing. His woodland in Wales is sustainably managed —
every tree felled part of a long, thoughtful cycle that lets the land
breathe, renew, and flourish. And then he brought some of that native
timber all the way to our islands for us to work with.

There’s a quiet joy in shaping wood that has travelled with intention.
Every ring, every knot, every curl of grain carries the story of a
living Welsh landscape, now meeting the salt air and steady hands of a
Shetland workshop. My task was simply to listen, follow, and honour
what was already there.

At Paparwark we speak often of craft as kinship — with land, with
people, with the slow wisdom of materials. These stools are a small
testament to that: rooted in gratitude, shaped with care, and offered
back to community.

May they carry the calm of both places — the Welsh woodland and the
wide Shetland sky — into whatever home they find.

Behind the scenes of the very first Desktop Shelf workshop… a day of sawdust, steady learning, and the quiet hum of figuring things out together.

A big thank‑you to Phil and Linda, who both arrived saying, “I can’t measure to save myself,” and then went on to produce beautiful shelves — square, clean joints, and the kind of careful marking that proves confidence often lags behind ability.

The workshop found its rhythm through shared problem‑solving, a few laughs, and the occasional pause to rethink a step. And yes — Jennifer kept us all going with some lovely homebakes that made the breaks feel just as restorative as the making.

Two shelves took shape, and so did the class itself — clearer, calmer, and ready for the next group of makers.

Here’s to learning together, discovering hidden skills, and the quiet magic of good company (and good cake) in the workshop

Heritage & Craftsmanship

Every Paparwark chair is built on the foundation of years of dedicated research into Shetland’s vernacular furniture — a tradition shaped by crofters, fishermen, and island joiners over more than two centuries. Before I ever began making these chairs, I spent years studying the originals: measuring them, sketching them, tracing their influences, and documenting the lives of the people who made and used them.

Historic Shetland furniture was born from necessity. Timber was scarce, the climate was harsh, and homes were small, smoky, and draught‑ridden. Yet from these constraints came a remarkable design language — low, sturdy armchairs for knitting and net‑mending, hooded chairs to shelter from the wind, settles that served as both seating and storage, and regional styles that varied from parish to parish.

My work continues this lineage. Every joint is traditionally morticed and tenoned for superior strength and longevity, echoing the construction methods used by generations of island makers. Panels are built to move naturally with the seasons, just as the old craftsmen designed them to survive Shetland’s shifting weather. These details
aren’t decorative; they are the structural principles that allowed the original chairs to endure for over a century.

I build each piece with the same respect for material, proportion, and purpose that I discovered in my research. This is furniture made to be lived with, repaired, cherished, and passed on — a modern continuation of a tradition that once filled croft houses across the islands.

Every Paparwark piece carries our branded maker’s stamp and an individual number, marking it as a unique item in an ongoing story of Shetland craftsmanship. These chairs are not reproductions; they are the next chapter in a heritage that deserves to be preserved and carried forward.

Our solid American oak chairs are priced at £725 each (ex‑factory),
with typical lead times of up to 3 months.

A rare opportunity to own a hand‑crafted Hooded Shetland Chair — and this one is in stock and ready to go.

Crafted from a beautiful combination of American Oak and Pine, this unique piece blends strength, warmth, and traditional Shetland character. Built entirely by hand using mortice‑and‑tenon joinery,
it’s made to last for generations.

This chair also features a hand‑cut dovetailed drawer — a mark of true craftsmanship and the kind of detail you only find in fine, bespoke furniture. It’s practical, elegant, and a testament to the hours of skilled work behind every Paparwark piece.

Finished with our rich Danish oil, the timber grain glows with depth and natural beauty. And like all our furniture, it carries its own numbered Paparwark plaque, making it a genuine collector’s item.

No waiting list. No 3‑month lead time. Just one exceptional chair, available right now.
