The winter winds have blown, a little snow has been seen, and frosts are all but over. Spring is on it's way and you can already see buds waiting to explode into life.
Spring is a wonderful time of year in our gardens when natures beauty pushes aside the greyness of the winter before it bringing colour back to our daily lives. Unfortunately everything grows a little to rapidly, weeds are as keen to win the race to dominate your garden as the flowers and shrubs you cultivate. It is time to get busy with a fork and break up those boarders to let the nutrients and air in to the roots. Many shrubs need their spring prune soon to encourage new growth and take out the damage that winter has done.
When you stand at the window your lawn is looking green and fresh, it is clearly starting to grow already and will need cutting very soon. Step outside and look more closely at your lawn and you will see a thick thatch, and probably moss too. This needs raking out, then aerating the lawn would do it the world of good. Many choose to feed their lawns at this time of year, others think that feeding a lawn means adding nasty chemicals to the environment but it doesn't have too. There are organic feeds for your lawn much the same way as you would use an organic compost or fertilizer for your shrubs and flowers. Do you have a pond with sludge building up in the bottom? If so a large scoop of this sludge in a bucket of water can be used as an organic feed for your hole garden simply by watering your garden, including the lawn you can organically feed it while making use of some of the waste you take out of your pond. The contents of your old compost bins will be well rotted by now and should not be going to waste, spread them out on your beds and boarders leaving them to mulch in after you have forked them through. Your garden will be happy to reward all your effort with a show to be proud of very soon.
