🌿 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲

Landscapes can be designed with minimal maintenance in mind. In any space, you will find that, over time, plants will spread, finding their own way and begin to take over. Naturally, most land if left untouched for some time eventually turns to woodland through succession. Therefore, even in a landscape that is designed for minimal intervention; to prevent succession, minor maintenance including the removal of unwanted plants and growth is still a necessity, so to not lose the beauty and function of the finished design.

🌿 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱
The abundance of hardy plants that find their way in and are not necessarily wanted are referred to as w**ds. It is quite a common misconception that a w**d is a specific type of plant, but in fact a w**d can be any plant that is not wanted and instead refers to the sole fact it was not intended to be there by design. Aside from affecting the overall look and design of the outdoor space, importantly w**ds can also be detrimental to the existing plants, by reducing the natural resources that they should have access to.

🌿 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲
Ongoing minor maintenance is imperative from the start. As the design continues to mature the level of maintenance required will reduce. The initial ‘w**ding’ stages allows the perfect opportunity to observe and develop a far greater understanding of the plant relationships with one another.

As a landscape designer it is our role to design systems and spaces that at the bare minimum maintain current biodiversity. We like to go further and always strive to support and enhance biodiversity.

Biodiversity refers to every living thing, including: plants, bacteria, animals, and humans. The term is used to describe the wide variety of life found on Earth. It also used more specifically to refer to the variety of species in one region or ecosystem. When we mention biodiversity in our landscaped gardens, we are talking about the living things found within the outdoor space and the immediate local area.

We recently completed a particularly exciting Edible Garden project for a client based in South Malling, Lewes.

The brief comprised of incorporating an edible Mediterranean-inspired garden that includes a deck that allows you to make the most of the beautiful view and sunsets. In addition, to create a play deck for their grandchildren with steps and access into the forested section. With the emphasis on ensuring the whole site is suitable as a playground for young children - a place where they can learn and grow.

An exciting and unique project and despite the challenges of working on an incredibly steep slope during the height of summer, we were able to fulfil the brief. What is Soil Science? Why is it so important to Landscape Design? The soil might seem insignificant but it is quite the opposite. Soil fluctuates considerably from area to area and investigating the soil present will determine which flora and fauna will flourish. Not all plants can survive in all types of soil. There are a number of reasons why and these are explained later on.

Left untouched by humans, soil is very rarely disturbed by nature itself. Occasionally a tree might fall, or mammals might dig a little hole but generally, soil is very rarely disturbed or turned. This has led to a very intricate microscopic and delicate ecosystem within the soil. A single teaspoon (1 gram) of rich garden soil can hold up to one billion bacteria, several yards of fungal filaments, several thousand protozoa, and scores of nematodes. Who said soil was boring? 🌿 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 - 𝗠𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵!

When there is something to be harvested or tended to, our natural reaction is to check on it. Imagine waiting for the first spears of asparagus to appear in spring or checking on the ripeness of the currents. This connection with a garden and the outdoors has been shown to increase health, way beyond just the nutrition gained from the crop.

By incorporating edibles into landscape design, we are not just putting in a veg patch, but we are using the edible plants as an aesthetically pleasing feature. This way we can make the garden bountiful as well as beautiful.
