Every 6 months you should operate the test button(s) on the RCDs and/or RCBOs in your home and work consumer units.

This proves that the mechanical elements are still working correctly, and have not seized up. If working correctly the breaker will switch off when tested, and you can switch it on again right after.

To help remember to do this, why not put it in your diary, right alongside ‘clocks change’ and do the two together, every 6 months.

Make this Sunday the day to show your RCD some love….who knows, it may save your life one day! 😉

For the second time this week we have been out and about for our new client, Festival Power, this time for a 2 day stint in Reigate installing temporary power for the Tom Kerridge ‘Pub in the Park’.

Despite the high temperatures we cracked through the installation, taking care of pre-booked requirements and last minute requests, ensuring that the event could open on time at 6pm today.

An event well worth a visit over the weekend, with some fabulous cookery demonstrations; great food and drink; and a top line-up of live music on the main stage.

Once in a while we get the opportunity to enjoy the sun, in the grounds of a stately home, and get paid for the pleasure. Courtesy of our new friends at Festival Power today is one of those days!

In the grounds of the Royal Automobile Club in Sutton we are here to look after the temporary power installation for their Concours event, visited by around 2000 people and with a large display of classic vehicles from across the ages. A wonderful chance to see how vehicle engineering has progressed across the years.

A recent customer call has served to demonstrate the vulnerability of elderly people living alone; the value of great neighbours; and the disgusting lengths that some will go to deprive people of hard earned savings.

The new owner of an elderly ladies home called to try and resolve issues with the inherited solar and battery systems, which could never have worked correctly.

We resolved the problems in less than an hour, but learned that the original installers, and other subsequent companies had deprived their customer of thousands of pounds, repeatedly selling un-necessary services, and even being caught by neighbours on one occasion sneaking in to create a fault so that they would have to come back, at further expense.

This is far from an isolated incident, so please, keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable neighbours, and try to ensure that they do not become the victims of doorstep sales and cold callers.

Did you know….

Lead generator services such as BARK and MYJOBQUOTE (amongst others) charge tradespeople to get the contact details of potential clients that are looking for quotes.

This is fine if you are genuinely looking for a quotation for works you need done, but perhaps, before posting for a tradesperson when you only want a budget cost for future planning, or simply to value check existing quotes or invoices - keep in mind that you may be costing someone money that they will never be able to recoup.

A quick search online will probably lead you to someone local that can help, without outlay on lead generators.

In December '23 we were invited to carry out an energy survey at a local business premises, where energy costs were extremely high and ever increasing. Whilst we identified the high load areas of the site, little could be done without major and very expensive work to reduce the base loads.
The survey found however that the site had been split into a number of business entities, and that in doing so two high load areas lent themselves perfectly to the introduction of solar PV.

After much background work, and with funding assistance from local community energy experts, OVESCO CIC, we designed and implemented two electrically separated PV systems. One at around 6kwp comprising 12 panels, and the other slightly larger, a 16 panel array offering around 8kwp.

Both systems went live on Friday 9th May 2025, and in the first two weeks have between them generated over 1,000kWh. A great start, and a definite business improvement for the site

Another year gone by, and a chance to reflect on some fantastic projects that we have undertaken or been involved with.

Our renewable energy client base continues to grow at a steady pace, focussing on quality installations and timely technical support for our customers. Projects have included the replacement of a school PV system (35kw), and removal and re-installation of another school system for roof maintenance, both for our friends at Ovesco. The design and installation of a 14 panel + triple battery domestic system in Brighton which, in the last 11 months has reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 5t and shown the equivalent of having planted 82 trees. The financial return of the system has also proved impressive at over £1,200 in the year! Smaller residential systems have also been installed on a number of properties, all showing results in line with design expectations.

Electric Vehicle charging has also continued to play a large part in our order book, strengthened further by our becoming one of the few approved HIVE charger installers for British Gas. These have been proving popular, but we also continue to offer Zappi, Anderson, Easee and many others to best suit your needs.

Domestic and Commercial electrical work of all shapes and sizes remains firmly at the heart of our business plan, and throughout the year we have undertaken a wide variety of works from replacing light fittings with low energy LED; property re-wires and installations to extensions, to specialist distribution systems in commercial warehouses; providing power for state of the art changing places facilities, and a complete theatre lighting refurbishment.

Let’s not forget the other side of the business - specialist event power. This year we have been contracted to provide labour only support and electrical testing on a number of key projects, including UK Athletics at London Stadium (broadcast, AV and timing systems power); Americas Cup sailing event in Barcelona (broadcast, communications and timing systems power); Insurance exhibition in Madrid (truss rigging; stand lighting and general power); P!nk Summer Carnival at Tottenham Hotspur’s Stadium (House power and support to touring production power), and finally Luminate Xmas Lighting Trail in Shugborough (Site power).

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers, large and small for their business this year, and to recognise the efforts of our contractors and suppliers who are all carefully chosen for their ability to support our business.

Another week in Spain, this time in Madrid working for a new client, Leading Edge Design

LED were in town to construct two exhibition stands at the IFEMA exhibition centre, and we were brought on board to look after overhead rigging, lighting, and stand electrics on the larger of the two.

Following an intensive 3 day build the exhibition gave us 2 days of down time, followed by an immediate 5 hour night derig.

A great effort all round, and an absolute pleasure to be working alongside the established team
