The Plant Plot

The Plant Plot Independent Garden Centre, The Lichfield Pantry Cafe Restaurant and the Cabin Village (crafts-retail- health & beauty)
Cafe 01543 253066

We are a traditional garden centre and cafe farm shop situated on the outskirts of Lichfield - popular with residents of Lichfield and the surrounding towns and villages. The Plant Plot’s charm lies in the fact that it has grown with a cafe, farm shop, baker and range of small cabins and shops - and is still very much a place for people who love their gardens.

The Fix-It Guide for Your Plants
1. Nitrogen (Yellowing Lower Leaves)
Nitrogen is the "energy" nutrient. When it’s low, plants pull it from old leaves to feed the new ones.
The Quick Fix: Use a liquid fish emulsion or a high-nitrogen fertilizer.
The Long Game: Mix in well-rotted manure or blood meal into your soil.
2. Phosphorus (Purple Underneath)
Phosphorus is crucial for root development and blooms. Purple leaves mean the plant's metabolism is stalling.
The Quick Fix: Apply a liquid bone meal solution or a "bloom booster" fertilizer.
Pro Tip: Check your soil temp! If the soil is too cold, plants can't "eat" phosphorus even if it's there.
3. Potassium (Burnt Edges)
Think of potassium as the plant's immune system. Without it, the edges literally "scorch."
The Quick Fix: Add kelp meal or liquid seaweed extract.
The Long Game: Bury banana peels (chopped small) near the base of the plant or use wood ash in moderation.
4. Iron (Yellowing with Green Veins)
This is called "Interveinal Chlorosis." It’s often a pH issue rather than an iron shortage.
The Quick Fix: Use a chelated iron foliar spray for fast absorption.
The Long Game: Check your soil pH. If it's too alkaline (high pH), the plant can’t absorb iron. Add sulfur to lower the pH.
5. Sulfur (Pale New Growth)
Sulfur helps produce chlorophyll. Unlike nitrogen, this affects the newest leaves first.
The Quick Fix: Apply Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate) dissolved in water.
The Long Game: Use elemental sulfur or organic compost to build up long-term levels.
6. Calcium (Twisted New Tips)
Calcium builds the "bones" of the plant. Without it, new growth comes out deformed or "hooked."
The Quick Fix: A foliar spray of calcium nitrate.
The Long Game: Add crushed eggshells or garden lime to your soil.
Note: Ensure consistent watering! Calcium moves through the plant via water; if watering is erratic, the calcium can't reach the tips.

Feeding newly planted plants is a bit like sending a fresher to uni with a Tesco meal deal and strict instructions not to live entirely on instant noodles. Sure, the soil’s there, but your poor little plant has just been yanked out of its comfy pot, shoved into unfamiliar territory, and told to “thrive.” A little extra food helps it settle in without having a full existential crisis. Well-fed plants establish quicker, grow stronger roots, resist disease better, and generally complain less through droopy leaves.
Picking the Plant Grub!

Bonemeal
The root nerd’s favourite. Bonemeal is packed with phosphorus, which is basically gym protein powder for roots. It encourages the plant to focus on building a solid underground support system instead of going overboard producing leaves it can’t emotionally or physically support yet. Slow, steady, dependable — like the one mate who actually attends lectures.

Fish, Blood and Bone
The full English breakfast of fertilizers. It’s got:
Nitrogen for leafy growth,
Phosphorus for roots,
Potassium for flowers and fruit.
Basically an all-in-one care package for plants that says, “Go on champ, you’ve got this.” It smells mildly suspicious, but plants absolutely love it.

Slow-Release Fertilizer
The meal-prep option. These little granules release nutrients slowly over months, so you can chuck them in and pretend you’re incredibly organised. Great for people who forget feeding schedules but still want thriving plants. Think of it as a subscription service for nutrients — less stress, fewer dramatic plant deaths.

From "I’m not quite sure" to "I love it!" 💖 We recently had the pleasure of transforming a 5-meter border for a customer who came to us looking for some creative direction. After exploring a few ideas, we settled on a lush, vibrant all-pink color palette that really makes the garden pop. There’s nothing we love more than seeing a client walk away with a smile and a vision brought to life. 🌸✨We used

2 x Nandina Domestica 'Pink Flamingo'
2 x Salvia Nemorosa
1 x Phorminum as the focal plant
2 x Berberis 'Rose Glow'
1 x Heucheea 'Hopscotch'
W x Calamagrostis 'Oberdam' for height and interest.
