Whilst there is much talk over the use of hydrogen in the transition away from carbon rich natural gas. Using different types of gas has been common place in Great Britain throughout the 200+ years of the gas industry. The British gas industry used a broad array of different manufacturing processes up until the 1970's. This picture shows some of them. was a large component of "town gas", the gas companies even built specific plants to manufacture hydrogen at times of need. Many areas took their gas supply from coke ovens, which produced it as a by-product to coke. Whilst coal was the original feedstock, from the late 19th century oil was used in increasing amounts, firstly in Carbureted Water Gas Plant, and then later in oil gas plants before a switch to reforming refinery by-products into town gas. Methane from coal mines was used to supplement "town gas" in some areas. Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) was imported first from the USA, before a larger supply was provided from Algeria. The Algerian LNG had a different composition and calorific value to North Sea Natural Gas which enabled us to convert to natural gas. So switching to a new type of gas is nothing new and neither is hydrogen.

Having a home equipped with smoke detectors, ready to give us a serious warning should a fire break out in our home, is not optional. Thinking we’re safe with a smoke alarm, it’s easy to forget about any other hazardous break out, including one that can’t be seen, smelled, or tasted… and is extremely toxic. Often called “the silent killer”, 'CO', or carbon monoxide should be on your radar when it comes to keeping your family safe. If your home has any gas, oil, or solid fuel appliances, you are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. If an appliance becomes damaged or faulty, or starved of fresh air for combustion from bad ventilation, carbon monoxide can build up in the room where the appliance is installed. A carbon monoxide alarm is a small cost to saving lives. Get yourself an alarm fitted in each room that you have a gas or fuel heater, and ideally an alarm fitted in a communal sleeping area such as a landing space. Doing this and ensuring that you have your gas, oil or solid fuel appliances checked and serviced every year, shall protect you and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning.
