Ian Green Garden and Landscape Design I design gardens that feel like they’ve always belonged. Thoughtful, useable spaces — shaped by how you live, not just how it looks.

Have you moved into a new or self-built property with a garden that is a blank canvas and do not know where to start? Or do you have an existing garden that is tired and does

n’t suit your lifestyle? Do you dream of the delight and happiness in having that outdoor entertaining area, or having a space to enjoy and relax, enriching your life during your free time?

“Ian has worked a miracle on the design of our "awkward" space at the rear of our property. Truly some wizardry involved, we could never have dreamed of anything like what Ian has done & we are extremely grateful & glad we used Ian for our project. Totally professional in every way, took a lot of time to understand what we wanted out of the space and delivered in the timescales specified. Please don't hesitate to use AGI Landscapes, we would recommend 100%”

As a qualified garden designer with over 25 years’ experience, I work closely with you to bring your dream garden to life. Just working on a design for a customer who is renovating there house, and has been left with a challenging front garden.

In this design I overcome the pain points of

- Uneven steps
- Poor flow through the garden to the front door
- Sloping garden

To help the client visual the design I also drew a 3d image.

I am back at the Lincolnshire show, but rather than putting on a show garden, myself and Joe at Zenscape have been asked to create a memorial garden.

Here is a short video of the garden, let me know your thoughts below.

1 year later… and just look at this 🌿

I revisited a Lincolnshire garden I redesigned just over a year ago — the plants have matured beautifully and completely come into their own. My customer is absolutely over the moon, and honestly, so am I.

This is exactly why I love what I do.

Drop a 🌿 below if you love a before & after, and share this if it inspires you! 👇

🌿 Have you ever walked past one of these and not given it a second thought?

Those plastic tubes wrapped around trees - tree guards - are meant to protect young saplings. But thousands of them are simply left behind once the tree is established. Over time they break down into microplastics that wash into our streams, rivers, and are eaten by wildlife.

It's a quiet, slow-moving environmental crisis - but one with a simple fix:

🌱 Remove them when the tree no longer needs protection
🌱 Or use biodegradable tree spirals that break down naturally

Watch the video to find out more - and tell me in the comments: have you seen abandoned tree guards near you? What do you think should be done about it? 👇

You know what I hear all the time? "I'd love a beautiful garden, but mine slopes - there's nothing I can do with it."

I genuinely smile every time someone says that. Because in my experience, sloped gardens are some of the most exciting spaces to work with.

Levels create drama. Terraces create usable space. Cascading water features, tiered planting, winding steps - you simply can't achieve any of that on a flat plot. A slope forces creativity, and creativity makes extraordinary gardens.

I've transformed challenging slopes all across East Midlands into spaces people actually use and love. A steep rear garden in Lincolnshire became terraces with seating, planting, and paths guiding people round. What was once a source of frustration became the favourite room in the house - just outdoors.

If you've got a sloped garden and you're not sure where to begin, let's have a chat. Call me or drop a message and we'll talk through what's possible.

Why do some plants thrive while others struggle, even when they're given exactly the same care?

The answer is often soil pH.

It's one of the most important factors in successful planting, yet it's rarely discussed until something starts going wrong.

In my latest Journal article, I explain:

🌱 What soil pH is
🌱 Why it matters
🌱 How to test it

Whether you're planning a new garden or wondering why certain plants never seem happy, understanding your soil can save a lot of time, money and frustration.

Did you know the right garden lighting can completely transform how you use your outdoor space - not just how it looks?

Whether it's a softly lit path for safe evening strolls or a glowing dining terrace perfect for summer entertaining, thoughtful lighting extends your garden well into the evening.

For example Festoon lights strung above a pergola create an instant, inviting atmosphere for outdoor dining - no matter the time of night.

Or low-level path lights guiding guests safely through the garden while adding a touch of elegance.

From uplights to underwater features, our latest blog covers all the main types and when to use each one.

Most people are reaching for a fan right now. But me — I'm heading out into the garden for my respite from the heat. The trees here are actively cooling the air — pulling water through their roots and releasing it around you. It's called transpiration — and it's basically nature's AC. Better still, there's a tree for every size of garden.

If you are unsure whether there is a tree for your space check out my my journal - https://www.iangreengardendesign.co.uk/post/how-trees-cool-a-garden-naturally

In an age where AI can generate a garden plan in seconds, I still choose to draw yours by hand and here's why.

When I pick up a pencil, I'm not just drafting a layout. I'm replaying every conversation we've had. I'm thinking about how the morning light falls in your garden, how your children play in it, how you want to feel when you step outside with your first coffee of the day.

No algorithm knows that. No software has sat with you and listened.

Hand drawing keeps me connected - to you, to your space, and to the craft I genuinely love. Every garden I design starts as a sketch, and that sketch carries something a CAD file simply never could.

If you'd like a garden designed with real thought, real care, and a real human behind every line - I'd love to hear from you.
