A painted faux Russian lapis lazuli finish carried out with both oil and vinegar ( not at the same time obviously). Naturally the yellow and white impurities found in lapis lazuli are separated and removed and this is usually reflected in the traditional painted finish however, historically the Russians preferred the vibrancy and effect of the yellow and white and incorporated it into the stone. Here is a sample of our painted Russian lapis finish.

Another batch of sottile cakes are dried and ready for use. There's no shelf life so they can be kept indefinately. So the more you make the better.

Hundreds upon hundreds of gilding transfer sheets have been finally relieved of 'scrap' gold leaf. Sometimes there is very little gold left and on a sheet and sometimes there is much more (depended on the job at hand). As we cannot bear waste we keep all used sheets and remove the gold leaf. It is quite tedious, however, it might surprise you to find how much gold can be retrieved.
The mound of cleaned sheets in the background produced the smaller mound of gold on the grinding slab. As you can see it is well worth the effort. The gold is then ground, washed/filtered to produce shell gold which is great for touching up frames etc.

This liquid stainer has been well and truly sealed in the tin.
John Line and Sons traded from 1880-1988 and manufactured paints, papers and wallpapers. This half full tin dates anywhere after WWII until the late 1960's, although it looks to be 50's-60's. Our catalogue for Lines products states that a tin this size (half pint) in Turkey Red would cost 3s5d (three shillings and five pence), that's £3.58 in today's money.
Turkey Red was a manufactured oxide and was produced by calcination. Just to complicate matters Turkey Red is also called Venetian Red, Pompeiian Red and Persian Red. It is a good dye for fabrics and printing.
