With over 30 years experience in the trade, the last 19 of which have been self employed, I have worked in private & holiday homes, local businesses, B&Bs, National Trust properties, & also for Countrywide Estate Agents & Suffolk County Council when based on the mainland. I am proud that I have built up a solid reputation on the Island for being a good, honest & reliable professional decorator. I

am on the Trading Standards Approved Tradesman list, having been toughly vetted, a process which includes taking up customer references & police checks. I have previously been a Dulux Approved Painter & was also a Checkatrade approved decorator. I specialise in all types of traditional decorating, both inside & out, including wall papering & coving. I can also offer my customers complete kitchen makeovers, which includes the painting of kitchen doors & units, & which can offer a tremendous saving on a new kitchen. Most types of kitchen doors can be painted using the correct preparation & paints. With a strong emphasis on thorough preparation, & using only quality trade products, I pride myself on my high standards, a claim which is backed up by my customer references & recommendations. I can also show any potential new customers an impressive portfolio of my work, as well as offering full public liability insurance & a work based guarantee. I offer free estimates & advice on all aspects of decorating & would welcome an opportunity to meet up with you to discuss this further.

A wonderful testimonial from Richard Healy from one of the most rewarding projects I have worked on...from 3 years ago. TP is based in the north west & this was their first project on the Isle of Wight, where we lived at the time.

On behalf of TP Supported Accommodation, I would like to thank Simon MAC Decorating for the mammoth job he completed for us in "fully" redecorating our new Supported Living Service in Newport Isle of Wight.
From what started as a 3 week job turned in to 2 months +, Simon managed and completed the ever changing list of tasks to totally transform the property from Dated and Tired, to modern and bright.
Were are not sure how we would of managed to get all of the works works completed without Simon's Project Management , and more importantly his contact base of Friends and Colleagues on the Island, all of whom did a fantastic job.
Being based in North West it would have been virtually impossible for us to complete the project in the time we did, without Simon's input and we would recommend him to anyone locally wanting a wonderful self-sufficient, honest Painter and Decorator.
Look no further than Simon, the photos don't do all the hard work justice.
Once again thanks for everything and I will catch up with you when I am next on the Island.

A rare venture outside for me, on this lovely old revolving summerhouse in Kirkby Green. In the tropical weather we enjoyed during the week, I was able to work in the shade at all times. After some considerable preparation, sanding, scraping, filling & washing down, the bare areas of wood were primed. All white was then undercoated & finished in Dulux oil-based brilliant white high gloss. The stained woodwork had two good coats of Albany premium opaque deepest ruby, which was a great product to work with. When stained wood hasn't been treated for some years it's almost impossible to achieve a consistent finish using traditional stains, but this came up a treat....& what a lovely view in the garden.

Nearly nine hours stripping woodchip off this dining room today, & boy am I knackered! Started by removing the face of the paper, then soaking the backing & scraping off, sanding everything & filling, before a good tidy-up. Will seal the walls with a coat of Zinsser Gardz in the morning, & then begin painting :-)

Customers sometimes get 2-3 decorators to quote for a job, & my advice is to always check the detail in the small print as well as the actual cost. Some of the key points that should be clearly set out in writing are:

A detailed scope of the work, room by room, with an itemized list of exactly what is being painted (eg walls, ceiling, doors, skirting boards, radiators etc), & the level of finish.

Details of the preparatory work (which is essential to achieving a good, lasting, professional finish). This should include all sanding, filling, caulking & washing down surfaces.

Specification of paint brands, which should always be trade & never retail/diy, & the finish (matt, eggshell, satinwood, gloss), & whether the customer or decorator is supplying these. It should also clearly state the number of coats being applied.

This list is not exhaustive, rather the basic points which should be set down in print. A customer recently said to me that "it was refreshing to see a detailed written tender as opposed to a text message". During another discussion about decorating a hallway in a bungalow, a lady mentioned the previous decorator was painting before lunch on the first day. I said there was at least a full days preparatory work given the size & specification of the work.

There is an old trades proverb which says, 'pay cheap, pay twice'. Employing a professional decorator isn't cheap, to please do ensure you know exactly what you're getting for your money.

A recent three week job for a lovely family in Metheringham. The artex ceilings throughout had been plastered, so I had a mix of painting the ceilings only in some rooms to three complete bedrooms & feature walls. As you can see from the photos, a lot of time was spent protecting walls in the part painted rooms. After weeks of plastering & decorating, the family now have their home back :-)

Started work today on a three week project for lovely customers in Metheringham. Lovely new plastering by Sam Carlisle Plastering, & for me, some ceilings through to complete rooms. Spent quite some time this morning protecting the walls in two rooms, before starting with a 'mist coat'. You can buy paints designed for new plaster, but in my humble opinion there's a far better, cheaper, & more effective way. My go to for this all important base coat is cheap matt emulsion, like 'contract matt' & roughly 30% water thoroughly mixed in with the paint. The 'mist coat' is essential on all new plaster, to prevent it acting like a sponge, drawing moisture out of the paint too quickly, which will lead to peeling, flaking & a weak non-durable finish. This essential first coat looks positively anaemic, but basically this seals the porous new plaster, creating a stable bonded surface for subsequent coats of paint.
Over many years as a decorator I have discovered many pitfalls caused by previous 'decorators' skipping the 'mist coat', which can prove costly to rectify.......
