Roses can be pruned fully now

Group 3 late autumn flowering clematis can be pruned to the ground now , ready for the new growth to start

Hedges can be trimmed before the nesting season starts

Shrubs can be pruned and shaped

Clean pots and greenhouses ready for the growing season

This is just a few jobs that can be done now

Happy gardening folks and as always if you need any help in your garden tidy turf & gardens can help

Well we are in to March already and spring is upon us finally ( hopefully no more rain )

So here are a few things to get started with in your garden

Potatoes
Now is the ideal time to start chitting your potatoes , potatoes come in three types first early - second early and main crop
What do I mean by chitting, well basically you buy your seed potatoes from garden centre and put them in a sunny windowsill or area and leave them till there shoots start to appear That is chitting , then they are ready to go into the ground or large pots

Tomatoes
March is a good time to start your tomato seeds of indoors or a cold frame and when they get to about 3 stems high and we are free of frost they can be transplanted outside

Dahlias
March is a good time to start of your dahlias , I like to start mine of in pots to start with indoors then transplant them when free of frost and always remember to leave the shoot sticking out of the compost

Lawns
March is a good time to add a lawn feed to your lawn to give it some me nutrients and if dry enough to scarify and aerate to alow any compacted soil to get air to it so your grass roots can breath and get all the dead grass and thatch out

Summer bulbs
It is not to late to get your summer bulbs planted like crocosmia - begonias- Lillie’s- gladioli planted

Weeding
With the wet weather we have had March is the perfect time to get those pesky w**ds out of your garden , with ground been wet they should be easier to pull out

And as always if you need any help in your garden tidy turf & gardens is here to help

Well the days are getting longer now and some dry weather at last
February and March are critical in the garden for getting your garden prepared ready for the new season
Here are a few jobs you can do during February and March

A) soil and beds - w**d all beds and borders and add much / compost to them ready for spring

B) vegetables - start to chit potatoes ready for planting and start seeds off on a windowsill or heated mat/ propagator , sow onion sets

C)) pruning- prune summer flowering clematis and winter flowering shrubs and fruit trees like apples and pears

D) planting - plant bare root roses and trees and shrubs

E) maintenance - clean greenhouses , pots and trays to get rid of pests

March jobs
A) sowing and planting- sow lettuce , spinning , radishes under cloches and start tomatoes , chilli’s and other greenhouse seeds off

B) border care - cut back deciduous ornamental grasses and winter flowering shrubs and divide perennials to create new plants

C) lawn care- give your lawn its first cut ( on a high setting just taking a small amount of to begin with) providing the ground is not to wet and apply a spring fertiliser

D)pests control - keep a eye out for slugs and aphids as your plants begin to grow

This is just a few of the jobs you can get on with in your garden.
And as always if you need a hand tidy turf & gardens is here to help

With the new year in full swing , our attention starts to turn to spring and the garden and planning for the new season

But if you have got the itch to start early , here are a few seeds you can start to grow now ready for spring / summer

Sweet peas
You can start sweet peas now either in a heated propogator or a warm windowsill

Tomatoes

Same goes for tomatoes to get a early crop of tomatoes you can start now in a propagator or windowsill

Broad beans

My favourite to grow this time of year

Onions

You can start onions off in modules in a propagator or windowsill ready for planting out in spring

And you can also order your seed catalogues from reputable suppliers and get planning ready for the 2026 season also first early potatoes will be available soon ready for chitting and planting
