🏡 Cottage build update, near Liskeard
It’s always rewarding to visit a project in progress — to see the drawings and ideas slowly becoming something real.

This 250-year-old cottage in Crow’s Nest is a wonderful example of old meeting new. We’ve kept the beautiful natural stone walls and oak beams while introducing the light, comfort and flow of modern living.

During the build, we've uncovered a few hidden challenges — damp issues and a section of the cottage that had been poorly rebuilt back in the 1940s.

It’s been important for us to approach these issues with real care — underpinning the structure where needed and laying a new floor slab to secure its future.

What stands out most is the craftsmanship on show. The stonework in particular is exceptional, and it’s been inspiring to see the passion of everyone involved in bringing this cottage back to life.

Projects like this remind us why we love what we do — creating spaces that respect the past while embracing the present.

Planning success in Looe! 🎉

We’re so pleased that our design for a two-storey extension in Looe, overlooking Hannafore Beach, has recently been approved.

This 1920s home sits on a tricky hillside site with tight access — but with careful design, we’ve been able to open up its potential. The new extension will capture these spectacular Channel views while adding light, space, and comfort for modern living.

Another step towards creating a true Space to Live for our clients. 🏡✨

✅ Another successfully completed project, this time on the north Cornwall coast near Padstow.

This home was finished around a year ago, following a brief to transform and extend a much-loved family property. The scope included:
– A rear extension to create a generous new kitchen, dining, and living space
– Conversion of the existing garage into a self-contained one-bedroom annex
– A new subterranean garage added to the front of the property

We collaborated with who developed the original concept design and secured planning permission. It was our role to then evolve the scheme, delivering the technical design and managing the tender and construction phases through to completion.

Swipe through for a look at the finished spaces — both inside and out.

Yesterday we celebrated the opening of — and today, we’re excited to share more about what went into making it happen.

We were brought on board to rework the scheme as part of a planning amendment, taking an initial concept and developing it into a fully detailed construction project. Our role included everything from design development and building regulations drawings to on-site support throughout construction.

The result is a vibrant local hub, home to a 15-bay driving range, mini golf course, and a feasting barn with a bar and restaurant. The layout flows seamlessly from one space to the next, with large openings that connect the interiors to the surrounding landscape.

One of the standout features in the feasting barn is the stunning oak frame with exposed trusses crafted by which contrasts with the galvanised steel frame with engineered glulam trusses in the golfing side of the building.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the project completed and in use — and we’re looking forward to returning soon and enjoying it ourselves.

If you’re planning a similar project and want support from concept to completion, feel free to reach out via message or email (details in bio).

It’s been a while since we’ve posted…but what better reason to return than a launch party? 🥳 🎉⛳

Over 18 months in the making – from the first redesign to final detailing – today we’re at the opening of a brand new driving range, mini golf & feasting barn restaurant in Crantock.

It’s been a privilege to help shape this fantastic space and support the development process. We're enjoying seeing the completed buildings and celebrating all the hard work with the team this evening.

Things we love to see - a completed project!✅🎉

Our latest finished design is a Victorian townhouse in Plymouth. We developed a new attic apartment and updated the existing stairwell to comply with regulations. It was important to create a design which served to enhance the local conservation area. This included creating two new rear window dormers that were in keeping with the local design guide and provided the space needed. The project also included working with original features such as the stairwell whilst updating fireproofing and soundproofing to adhere to regulations.

A standout feature from our site visit was the overall finish of the new handrail, which seamlessly flows from old to new. It had been hand crafted from a new piece of mahogany - very impressive!

How's this for a view? 👀🌊✨
Looe was looking spectacular today from the balcony of an exciting new extension and plot restoration project. We're looking forward to working on a design with this seaview as it's focal point.

Embracing my RIBA mentoring role, today I welcomed three talented students from Plymuniarch to share a day in the life of Newbury Design.

Our day started with a visit to our space The Workshed Liskeard and the important Friday morning breakfast tradition. After meeting colleagues, students took a tour of the Workshed and we reviewed drawings of the sites we were about to visit.

Next we made our way to a project site in Padstow, Cornwall which is nearing completion. Engaging with the builders, we gained valuable insights into the progress of the project, including some of the recent challenges with weather and viewing some of the excellent craftmanship they've produced. Thank you Brendon and Alex from for taking the time to show us around.

Our final stop was a project in Tintagel, Cornwall where construction started in January 2024. This was a good opportunity for the students to see projects both at the start and finish stages. Thank you Ronnie and Patrick from Pentire Construction for showing us around.

The students' feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the value in gaining firsthand experinces of technical aspects on site. Witnessing their enthusiasm and growth throughout today has been very rewarding, and I look forward to continuing to support the next generation of architects.

Seeing beautiful old buildings being restored to their former glory - just one of the things we love about our work at Newbury Design.

This staircase is part of a restoration project on a grade 2 listed building in Liskeard. We're helping the client with a listed building application and looking forward to seeing the elegance of this stairway continue to emerge.
