Garlics 🧄 year 3 are sprouting nicely.

It’s been super busy of recent, so trips to the allotment have consisted of chicken feeds and cleans, food waste deliveries to the composters and tidy ups

Plans are in the pipeline though for a second greenhouse, more beds and seed planting come spring.

Is it bad we are willing spring here already?!? 🌱

Purple sprouting broccoli plants have been growing from seedlings since March. We planted them out in May. We popped them in a no dig, homemade compost bed and waited to see what happened. The answer, some large plants have grown. But no broccoli yet……

…. turns out it takes a year long commitment before you will harvest your first purple sprouting 🥦. The plant needs to go through flowering, seed set and seed maturation. So we are patiently watching the progress and looking forward to tasting the veg when it comes 🤞🏻

Today at the plot 🌧️

Even though it’s nearly November there’s still plenty to be done….

Two weeks ago we built some new composters. Today they were filled, the right composter with the butternut squash plants. We harvested the last of the squash and then dug up the now dying plants. In the left, the sweet corn plants were dug up and broken down after we harvested all the corn a few weeks ago and have been using some for ourselves and some for the chickens as feed - they love them!

Andy dug up the top layer of muddy soil from the chickens run to tidy it up and layered that on top of both composters to pack the plants down and help them degrade. This also allowed us to put wood shavings down in the chicken coop to keep that and the chickens cleaner in the now wetter weather. Two birds one stone.

We are still harvesting tomatoes 🍅 from the greenhouse due to the continued milder weather. We have had tomato sauce, tomatoes and burrata, and tomatoes on ryvitas. All delicious.

The avocado plants 🥑 are now all also in the greenhouse to ensure they don’t get bitten by the temperature dropping.

Cleared beds have been covered to stop any weeds until they are used for planting again. It was a productive day and great for clearing the head.
