The Taj Mahal was constructed entirely out of gorgeous marble – an expensive mausoleum, to say the least! The Taj was commissioned by Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is estimated that it took more than 20 years to fully complete and cost 23 million rupees (over $800 million USD) to build. The Taj Mahal has rightly been a wonder of the world ever since.
The Taj Mahal wasn’t the only famous structure to take luxe and opulence from the marble stone. The Greek Bust of Artemis, Washington Monument, Supreme Court Building, The Duomo Cathedral in Florence and so many other architectural wonders also employed the use of marble.
