20 Years Strong: A Motherwell Story
Twenty years is a significant milestone in any endeavour, but it's especially remarkable when it comes to owning and nurturing a successful mid-sized company. Here at Motherwell Tank Protection, we have recently achieved this milestone. It's a testament to the dedication, resilience, and vision of the owners, who have guided the business through various challenges and opportunities, transforming it into a thriving entity that contributes to the community and the economy.
Our origins can be traced back over 165 years, to the town in which we still operate, St. Helens, in the heart of Northwest England which is known for its strong identity and cultural history, rooted in its world-famous industrial heritage. This is something we are very proud of and take great pleasure in still being a British manufacturer of goods to this very day.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern business, it's easy to overlook the remarkable achievements of mid-sized companies, which often operate under the radar of larger corporations. However, these often-unsung heroes play a vital role in the economic landscape, providing employment opportunities, driving innovation, and supporting local communities.
The journey of owning a mid-sized company is often filled with twists and turns, requiring the owner to adapt, innovate, and persevere through difficult periods. It's a constant balancing act, requiring the owners to manage financials, oversee operations, lead a team of employees, and navigate the ever-changing business landscape.
The first few years of any new business are always the most precarious, however one of the biggest challenges faced by MTP, as with most companies from the small one-person operations to the large conglomerates came in March 2020 with the COVID-19 Pandemic. Whilst some overseas operations were curtailed, we were classed as an essential supplier services company and our personnel identified with key worker status, which enabled us to operate with some degree of normality. This was a huge challenge which we feel we navigated rather well, and employee retention remained high thanks to proactive steps taken early in the pandemic to prioritise employee well-being and adapt to changing needs.
Despite the challenges, the rewards of owning a successful mid-sized company are immense. The owners’ vision and hard work have directly contributed to the creation of a thriving business that employs individuals, provides products and services that are valued by customers, and generates economic activity within the community.
In addition to the financial benefits, owning a mid-sized company often provides a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction. The owners are able to make a direct impact on the business, contributing to the success of the company and the well-being of those who rely on it.
From small beginnings selling Motherwell tank fittings to mainly UK clients, we have made ourselves an exporting success story, selling in excess of 60% of our breather valves, flame arresters, emergency vents, tank fittings and level gauges to overseas clients. Our products are manufactured in our UK factory, located in St. Helens between Liverpool and Manchester, and sold to many of the world’s biggest companies, supplying equipment to Shell, BP and NASA to name a few.
One of our proudest achievements is our collaboration with local colleges in implementing our highly successful apprenticeship scheme and we are delighted to offer employment opportunities to the local community.
As Motherwell Tank Protection celebrates our 20th anniversary, it's an opportunity to reflect on the journey, honour the contributions of our employees, and express gratitude for the support of customers, suppliers, and the community. It's also a time to look ahead with renewed vision and excitement, as we embark on the next chapter of growth and development.
