“I won’t bother with gas fire service this, I’ve only used it one or twice in the last 12 months”.
Lost count how many times I’ve heard that from customers, hopefully these pictures will help change your point of view.
It doesn’t matter if you use the fire once or a hundred times a year, a gas fire connected to an open chimney relies on the aforementioned chimney to operate safely. A gas fire service isn’t just confirming the safe operation of the fire it’s also confirming the safe and correct operation of the chimney/flue.
When your fire is in use there’s only one place the fumes can go if they don’t go up and out the chimney and that’s back into the room.
This customer had a lucky escape, the signs of sooting and spillage on the fire were an indicator that something wasn’t right. The inspection of the chimney throat was the confirmation.
Getting your gas fire serviced every year and installing a carbon monoxide alarm is the only way the ensure your gas fire is safe to use.

This video is from a boiler installation I did in Machynlleth last month. I converted the system from an old open vented, pumped heating/gravity fed hot water system that was heated by an old Baxi Bermuda fire back boiler to a sealed/pressurised combi boiler system.
There was quite a lot of work involved in this install and pretty much a whole day was given over to flushing the system owing to the fact that the system had a lot of sludge and debris in it.
We are in the day and age of the 5/10/12 year boiler manufacturer warranty and manufacturers who are offering these lengthy warranties absolutely insist on systems being spotless in order for the warranty to be upheld by them.
As I said in the video, nearly clean isn’t really clean and nearly clean just isn’t good enough to uphold your warranty.
I like to ensure when I hand over a new boiler to a customer that when I say they have a 10 year warranty that’s exactly what they’re getting.
You’ll get a cheaper boiler install from companies like Boxt and iHeat but if the install was like the one I was talking about with another tradesman the other day then you can be certain that your warranty will be at risk. Boxt installed a boiler inside 4 hours - there is no way on God’s green earth you can do the install and then carry out a full system flush inside 4 hours. It’s just not possible.
You might be saving yourself a few quid for your install but you’ll be forking out hundreds (potentially thousands) repairing your boiler a few years down the line when the manufacturers nulls and voids your warranty because the system wasn’t cleaned effectively during the installation process.
Your local engineer may be more expensive but they’ll be a damned sight more diligent than some of these companies selling boiler installs for a song.

System conversion from S-Plan to Combi. It’s a little busy in this airing cupboard but it’s just being sorted and reconfigured to allow the system to work for a combination boiler.

The hot water cylinder has been removed.

The return from the coil on the cylinder has been capped.

The heating zone valve has been removed and bridged out to allow the flow to move freely around the heating circuit with no restriction.

Any unused section of hot water outlet pipe has been cut back and capped as far as possible to prevent any dead legs (dead legs caused by unused and uncommissioned legs of hot water pipework can have an adverse effect on the operation of your combi boiler).

If not done correctly all of the above things can prevent your boiler/system from working correctly when changing from heating/hot water cylinder system to a combi system.

Boiler/System wiring - my least favourite part of installing.
Fitting a pipe and frost stat in series due to the boiler being installed in an unheated space.

Relying on the boilers in-built frost protection or relying on a frost stat alone can lead to the boiler firing unnecessarily during colder periods, sometimes for hours on end. Whilst it stops the boiler from freezing it costs you an arm and a leg in terms of gas bills.

Fitting a pipe stat in series means the boiler will only fire if the air temperature drops below 3 degrees Celsius AND the temperature of the boilers return pipe is under 20 degrees Celsius .

Obviously water freezes at 0 degrees so there’s no need for the boiler to fire if the pipework is nowhere near that temperature but if the boiler needs to fire it will raise the temperature over 20 degrees Celsius in no time at all - meaning smaller gas and energy bills for you the customer alongside the peace of mind knowing your boiler and system is protected from freezing 😀❄️👍🔥

Can’t stress how important boiler maintenance is, not just for safety but for saving yourself money.
This boiler hadn’t been serviced and maintained properly, it was only 7 years old yet due to a lack of correct servicing the heat exchanger had ruptured (check out the orangey brown gunk along the bottom of the heat exchanger where it sits on the black plastic sump). Not only that you can see that the burner gasket (the red seal) and electrodes were in a poor state meaning the boiler would have been operating unsafely.
Fortunately for the customer the heat exchanger has a 10 year manufacturers warranty meaning a replacement was sent out for free which I then fitted alongside a new gasket and electrodes.
If that boiler was over 10 years old the customer would have to pay for a new heat exchanger and that would cost an astronomical amount - in many cases it’s more cost effective to replace the boiler. Hence why annual servicing and correct servicing of your boiler will prevent issues like this arising.
Don’t leave your safety to chance and help save yourself some cash, get your boiler serviced and maintained correctly.

Boiler servicing done properly ✊💪. Boiler service done for a lovely customer in Dolgellau.
Here’s a brief breakdown of what I did for this customer to give her peace of mind and to ensure her boiler is ready for the heating season.

🔴Gas installation tightness tested, purged and re-lit.
🔴 Appliance electrics checked
🔴 condensate trap and magnetic system filter cleaned. Inhibitor levels checked.
🔴 Boiler controls checked and interrogated to check fault history - to ensure there aren’t any repeat/persistent faults.
🔴 Gas working pressure checked.
🔴 Boiler gas rated to ensure boiler is burning the correct amount of gas (and also to confirm its correct and safe operation).
🔴 Fan pressures checked
🔴 Boiler drained and expansion vessel recharged (not forgetting to test the schraeder core isn’t passing 👍)
🔴 Combustion levels checked (high fire & low fire).
🔴 Appliance safety cut out devices checked.
🔴 Heating and hot water operation checked.
🔴 System walked to ensure all rads heat correctly and that there’s no leaks.
🔴 Customer controls returned as they were before my arrival.
🔴 Service history log book signed to maintain customer’s 10 year warranty with the manufacturer.

Boiler servicing is worth doing properly as it saves you money and protects your boiler and system against needless faults and breakdowns.

This is why DIY’ers and non gas trained trades should keep clear of installing or working on any gas appliances and/or installations.
This hob was designed to work on natural gas but whoever had fitted this hob had not replaced the injectors to convert it to LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).
Whilst those yellow floppy flames might seem benign they’re not. With any burner burning like this you can be sure it’s producing high levels of carbon monoxide. LPG gas operates at almost twice the pressure of natural gas hence why you’re seeing those large flames, the flames on a gas hob should be small, tight, stable and blue.
The scariest part of all is that this hob has been installed and used for years prior to the new owners moving in.
Don’t take chances it’s just not worth it. Always seek out a Gas Safe Registered engineer for any and all gas work that you need doing.
