Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows feels especially relevant here. The imperfection of raw timber, alongside moments concealed in shade, makes this a landscape of exploration, where beauty lies not in the object itself but in the shifting patterns created through the interplay of light and darkness. The project centres on screening, on being seen and unseen, and on fleeting glimpses as people move through the spaces. Thanks for capturing it so well .

The playscape at the National Arboretum Westonbirt is a play landscape designed for all ages, encouraging open-ended exploration, movement, and imagination. Constructed from timber sourced directly from the arboretum, the project highlights the natural beauty of its materials, with exposed bark, knots, and irregular edges that enhance the connection between play and the surrounding landscape.

Featuring a series of hide-and-seek walls, lookout tower, and log scrambles set within a contoured terrain, the playscape offers opportunities for climbing, hiding, balancing, and observing. Instead of outlining a specific route or method of play, it invites visitors to create their own journeys, discovering thresholds, elevated viewpoints, and surprising moments along the way.

Hundreds of hours processing timber, thousands of wooden dowels, hours spent charring the structure, countless tractor runs moving logs, and one Land Rover stuck in the mud later, our playscape at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum is complete.

More photographs of the finished project to come, but for now, here is a look behind the scenes of the build. Every piece was made from pre-felled oak sourced within the arboretum, with four weeks of prefabrication in our Herefordshire workshop and three weeks on site in Gloucestershire.

We’re thrilled to have our work on display as part of the Future Observatory exhibition at the Design Museum, London. Loom 2 of the Rural Roaming Room can be seen on the external plinth for the next month, while our steam-bent scale model will be on show inside for the next year. Huge thanks to everyone who made this possible

Another glorious week on Ynys Môn with the Public Map Platform, setting up the Rural Roaming Room.

At five different locations, the looms have been collecting woven identities in the form of stories and materials from the places they have travelled. This time, we worked with Natural Resources Wales, who allowed us to harvest marram grass from the dunes to thatch one of the looms. The dune ecosystem at Newborough has been in rapid decline, so as well as reintroducing a local material once used for thousands of years in construction and woven crafts—until Queen Elizabeth I prohibited its harvesting—it also helped to destabilise the dune ridges. This allows the sand to be carried inland by the wind, helping to preserve this rare and valuable habitat.

A huge thank you to everyone for the help and hospitality we received, from visiting school children, a blackbird that made a loom its home, members of the public, and all those involved in the project. Special thanks to Tim Lyddon for his thatching expertise and for the hard work of manually harvesting the grass in last week’s heat.
