Celebrating craftsmanship and detail, our bespoke lighting for the private office in Dawsons Place was central to achieving a timeless and welcoming atmosphere.

One of our much-loved examples is in the main meeting room, where the client wanted a decorative pendant light that could span the table.

Approaching this as a functional yet artistic installation, our show-stopping design comprises of alabaster cubes which are arranged loosely to diffuse the light across the room. We refined the construction of these to have intricate, flush edges which can still be opened for maintenance and bulb changes. A metal framework was needed for stability, and we saw this as an opportunity to create a beautiful feature of this complex, wrapped antique brasswork.

The same materials feature in the staircase chandelier to help tie the spaces together. Having tested a range of different ideas to match the stairs' organic design, we drew inspiration from cascading water. The alabaster light tubes were placed strategically - suspended from a series of antique brushed brass rods - so that they filled enough space to provide consistent light without overcrowding the narrow stairwell. As a result, the light gently permeates through every storey, and the lit tubes highlight the water-like ripples of the alabaster texture.

Our team were on site at design meetings recently, for a grand townhouse which we're currently transforming into a family home.

Our vision here is to reinstate the Arts and Crafts character of the original property, introducing carefully considered details to bring this back to life as a focal point.

As part of our design process, we workshopped the different moodboards you can see here. With each floor in the townhouse providing a separate function, there are spaces for entertaining and relaxing. It was important to us to have the materials and finishing touches reflect these different atmospheres - from elegant, brass Van Cronenburg hardware to geometric mosaics from London Mosaic.

Quirky elements throughout the home also add some fun character. One of our favourite additions is this Craven Dunnill Jackfield Ltd tile which features a gorgeous blue flower, hand drawn by Octavia, one of our interior designers.

As a perfect addition to the layered interiors trends and for those embracing antique finds, pelmets are making a comeback as an eye-catching focal point.

Delivering on both style and function, pelmets decoratively conceal curtain tracks, while also offering insulation and blocking light. Like in these beautiful examples from Liszt House, they can be found above windows or beds, and are a wonderful way to create a feeling of cosiness and warmth.

While pelmets have historically used the same fabric as their curtains, we find that they offer a great opportunity to playfully explore constrasting and matching designs, fabrics, trims and finishes, as these are visible on both sides.

In traditional settings, these details are often paired with soft pelmets, to create an opulent period look. However, they're also versatile enough to suit modern interiors. For a more contemporary effect, we find that solid box pelmets provide structure and simplicity, ideal for a clean, paired back look.

Earlier this year, we spoke to Sheerluxe about what makes pelmets the must-have additions of the moment, and how to design with them. Read more here: https://bit.ly/49Hzq6w

We've been looking back at our favourite moments from our practice trip last year, and visiting Wimpole Hall - this stunning Grade I listed country home in Cambridgeshire - was a definite highlight!

Interestingly, the design of Wimpole developed over generations, with building work starting in the mid-17th century. Later, it was Sir John Soane who was commissioned to make alterations to the house and design various other buildings on the estate.

As our practice often draws upon Soane's work as a significant design influence, we enjoyed learning more about his vision for Wimpole - in particular, his Yellow Drawing Room.

This features a beautiful, barrel-vaulted ceiling which opens up to a spacious central interior through arched openings. Set deep into the home, this impressive space is top-lit via a domed roof lantern, and complete with intricate detailing.

Our second stop was Boxted Hall in Suffolk. This moated 14th-century manor house has been occupied by the same family line for 600+ years and offered the perfect base for a weekend of team building, with the countryside on our doorstep.

Thank you to Wimpole and Boxted for letting us visit. We're already looking forward to exploring more this year!

As we reveal more about the spaces at Soutar House, here's a glimpse into our dressing room design for this beautiful period home.

This space was an opportunity to capture the client's timeless and classic style while creating a function-led layout that would optimise storage solutions. We opted for an entirely bespoke wraparound wardrobe with a dresser island in the middle, complete with an accessories drawer.

One of our favourite details here is the upholstered wardrobe fronts by James Hare, which are finished in a soft palette of alabaster, cream and white, with subtle brass accents in the handles and light fixtures.

These tones are also picked up in the beautiful hand-painted De Gourney silk wallpaper opposite, offering the perfect backdrop for our intricate dressing table design and carefully sourced brass mirror.

This timeless and sophisticated staircase design at Butterfly House fulfils a key role in unlocking the design potential of this post-modern property.

In its previous configuration, the clients struggled with the home's confusing and disjointed layout. To simplify this complex 'butterfly' layout - we introduced an elegant, natural stone staircase at the heart of the home to act as a welcoming interior focal point. The elliptical staircase re-connects the two wings of the property, giving structure and definition to the home’s irregular floor plan. Where we added new leisure spaces at lower garden-level, the staircase also links these back to the existing spaces, offering a harmonious sense of cohesion between old and new.

In recognition, the staircase was awarded Interiors Winner of the prestigious Natural Stone Awards.

To mark Earth Day 2024, we’re reflecting on our sustainability ethos as a practice.

We've been working on ways to prioritise sustainability in our design, whether that's implementing passive design into our new builds, effective retrofitting of existing buildings or future-proofing historic properties, to reduce the carbon footprint of our work.

Thinking beyond this, we feel that it's essential to recognise that sustainability also encompasses factors such as conscious material choices and ethical practices when it comes to sourcing materials and products.

In our pursuit of sustainability, we strive to embrace the circular economy, continuing to broaden our approach by actively sourcing and curating pre-loved furniture for our projects, reimagining this for our homeowners' vision.

We are dedicated to working with specialists and skilled craftsmen, to carefully restore and reupholster these pieces and preserve their "made to last", high-quality design. This aligns with our ethos of durability and timeless design and reflects our dedication to creating spaces that stand the test of time.

This wonderfully light and airy kitchen, forms a key part of our refurbishment work on this Edwardian property. Inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement, the new kitchen wing features arched windows and vaulting, paying particular homage to Sir Edwin Lutyens and his inspiring work at Castle Drogo.

To complement this, the vibrant blue cabinetry fills this new double-height space with personality and warmth - embracing its role as the social heart of the home. The considered layout offers ample storage and entertaining space, while the shaker style is a great fit for the home's history.

When it comes to details we're always looking for opportunities to balance decoration with practicality. Depending on how you use your kitchen, that could mean opting for traditional glass door panels like these, enabling visual organisation and creating interest.

But on a smaller, more subtle scale this could also be carefully paired metal accents. From the traditional cupboard handles to the pot rack, as designers, we find this to be an effective way to lift any kitchen style.

This project was designed in collaboration with Ben Pentreath. Find out more about our work on this project via our website: https://bit.ly/3W08jiP

Our team loves to incorporate marble into our projects as not only is it durable and easy to maintain, but there is so much to experiment with when it comes to colour and patterning.

For an elegant, luxurious finish, grey and white marble is a timeless pick that sits in harmony with wider room concepts. Our bathroom counters at Soutar House - made from Calacatta Vagli marble - and living room fireplace at Leverhulme are both examples of how this pale marble can complement a paired-back colour palette and metal finishes to create a calm, contemporary yet classic interior.

In comparison, colourful marble offers a true focal point. At Knolehurst, our vision for the basement was to create a sophisticated, comfortable family room, where neutral tones and natural materials could offer lots of versatility. This was reflected and enhanced by our choice of Verde Alpi marble for the furniture that we custom-designed for this space. Here, the marble's intricate green vein pattern immediately draws the eye, taking centre stage even in small amounts.

Have you seen our latest project yet? At Soutar House, we completely refurbished an early 1900s property to create a family home for our clients in the heart of Hampstead Garden Suburb.

Our brief was driven both by the clients' "timeless and classic" design vision and their practical requirements as a family of 5. Inspired by Sir John Soane, our design approach blends aspects of traditional detailing with an elegant modern aesthetic, introducing a series of generous social and entertainment spaces for all to enjoy together. To complete these we introduced soft, natural forms in the furniture and understated and comfortable finishes that create a luxurious home that is still well-suited to family life.

As described by SheerLuxe, this has now become "a home the family can grow into – one that will adapt to them and be suitable for them and their children for years to come."

In revisiting our archives, we recently spotted this wonderful hand-drawn elevation, which forms part of a set of drawings, likely produced for planning.

This drawing is dated December 1985, and shows the south elevation of a property along Clifton Gardens, Westminster - documenting the proposed restoration and renovation of this historic facade and the arched structure of the basement below.

From the roof and portico to the traditional period features and stonework, we've loved looking at each of the meticulous details here, each seemingly drawn in by hand. We look forward to continuing to share more sketches soon.
