How to Properly Remove Old Paint to Achieve a โ€œFactory Finishโ€

Want to refresh your doors, walls, or railings, but the old paint is peeling, cracked, or just looks tired?
Simply painting over it is almost always a mistake.
In a few months, the new paint will start to peel too.

A long-lasting result starts with proper surface preparation.
Hereโ€™s how we do it:

1๏ธโƒฃ Assess the condition โ€” we check how well the old paint is holding.
2๏ธโƒฃ Remove the old paint โ€” either mechanically or chemically (depending on the surface).
3๏ธโƒฃ Fill and smooth the surface โ€” so there are no bumps or texture lines.
4๏ธโƒฃ Apply primer โ€” this ensures durability and adhesion.
5๏ธโƒฃ Finish with a spray machine
This gives a perfectly smooth, โ€œfactory-qualityโ€ finish โ€” with no brush or roller marks.

The result:
โœ… Smooth, professional finish
โœ… No need to replace doors or woodwork
โœ… Long-lasting coating

Painting MDF cabinets requires proper preparation since the material is porous and can absorb paint unevenly. Hereโ€™s a step-by-step guide:

1. Surface Preparation

Cleaning: Wipe down the cabinets with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.

Degreasing: Use a degreaser (such as alcohol solution or TSP).

Sanding:

If the MDF is bare, sand it with 120-180 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.

If the MDF is already painted or laminated, lightly sand it with 220 grit sandpaper to improve adhesion.

Dust Removal: Wipe with a damp cloth or use compressed air.

2. Priming (Essential Step!)

MDF is highly absorbent, so primer is a must.

Use a shellac-based primer (e.g., Zinsser BIN) or adhesion primer.

Apply 2 coats with a roller or spray gun, sanding lightly with 320 grit sandpaper between coats.

3. Painting

Choose enamel paint (water-based or oil-based, such as acrylic or alkyd).

Best application method: Spray gun or high-quality velour roller.

Apply 2-3 thin coats, sanding lightly with 320 grit sandpaper between coats.

Allow each coat to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

4. Finishing Coat (Optional)

For extra durability, apply a clear topcoat (matte, satin, or gloss).

Use polyurethane or acrylic varnish (e.g., Polyvine, General Finishes).

Tips:

โœ” Do not use water-based paint without primer โ€“ MDF will swell.
โœ” Avoid applying thick coats; multiple thin layers work better.
โœ” Allow the paint to cure fully before assembling the cabinets (7-14 days for full hardness).

Choosing the right paint color for a room depends on lighting, the room's purpose, size, and the desired atmosphere. Here are some key points:

1. Consider the Lighting

Natural light: North-facing rooms look better with warm tones (beige, peach, warm gray), while south-facing rooms suit cooler shades (blue, gray, green).

Artificial lighting: Warm bulbs soften colors, while cool bulbs make them appear brighter.

2. Room Size

Light colors (white, pastels, light gray) visually expand the space.

Dark colors (charcoal, deep blue, emerald) create a cozy feel but can make the room appear smaller.

3. Room Purpose

Living room โ€“ warm neutral tones (beige, gray, olive) work well.

Bedroom โ€“ calming colors like blue, powder pink, sage green, or warm gray.

Kitchen โ€“ bright and fresh shades (white, mint, peach, lemon yellow).

Childrenโ€™s room โ€“ soft pastel tones (mint, light yellow, soft blue, blush pink).

Home office โ€“ colors that enhance focus (deep blue, charcoal, gray).

4. Color Combinations

Monochrome โ€“ different shades of one color. Great for minimalist interiors.

Contrast โ€“ combining two or three shades (e.g., white and navy, gray and mustard).

Neutral base + accents โ€“ walls in soft colors (white, beige, gray) with vibrant furniture or dรฉcor.

5. Test Before Buying

Apply samples to the wall and observe how they look in different lighting conditions to avoid unexpected results.

If you're unsure, go for versatile neutral shades โ€“ they pair well with furniture and dรฉcor.

Process of Removing Mold and Painting the Wall

Mold on the wall not only ruins the appearance but can also be harmful to health. Before painting, it is important to properly prepare the surface and eliminate the cause of mold growth.

1. Preparation and Mold Removal

Identifying the Cause: Mold usually appears due to high humidity or poor ventilation. It is essential to find and fix the source (e.g., leaks, condensation, insufficient air circulation).

Protecting the Area: Cover furniture and floors with plastic sheets or fabric, and wear protective gloves and a mask.

Treating the Wall:

Prepare a solution (e.g., a 1:3 mixture of water and bleach or a specialized anti-mold treatment).

Apply the solution to the affected areas using a sponge, brush, or spray bottle.

Let it sit for 10โ€“15 minutes, then thoroughly rinse with clean water.

Allow the wall to dry naturally or use a fan/heater.

2. Preparing the Surface for Painting

Removing Damaged Paint: If the paint is peeling or bubbling, carefully scrape it off with a spatula.

Filling and Sanding: Fill cracks and uneven areas with filler, then sand smooth once dry.

Priming: Apply an anti-mold primer to prevent future mold growth and improve paint adhesion.

3. Painting the Wall

Choosing the Paint: Use moisture-resistant paint with anti-mold properties (such as latex or acrylic paint).

Applying the Paint:

Apply the first coat using a roller or brush.

Let it dry (drying time depends on the type of paint).

Apply a second coat for even coverage.

After completing the work, it is essential to maintain a dry environment by ventilating the room, monitoring humidity levels, and using a dehumidifier if necessary.

If mold keeps appearing, additional waterproofing or improved ventilation may be required.

Here's a step-by-step process for repainting a ceiling after a water leak:

1. Inspection and Preparation:

Inspect the ceiling for damage. Ensure the source of the leak is fully repaired and the area is completely dry.

Remove any loose or flaking paint caused by the water damage using a scraper.

2. Cleaning the Surface:

Clean the affected area with a mild detergent to remove stains, mold, or mildew. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

3. Sanding:

Sand the damaged area to create a smooth surface and blend it with the rest of the ceiling.

4. Applying Stain Blocker/Primer:

Apply a stain-blocking primer to prevent water stains from bleeding through the new paint. Let it dry completely.

5. Filling and Smoothing:

If there are any cracks or holes, fill them with a suitable filler. Once dry, sand it again to ensure a smooth finish.

6. Painting:

Apply the first coat of ceiling paint, ensuring even coverage.

Allow it to dry completely before applying the second coat for a perfect finish.

7. Cleanup:

Clean the work area and ensure no drips or paint marks are left behind.

To varnish a stair banister, follow these steps:

Prepare the Surface: Sand the banister to create a smooth surface for the varnish to adhere to. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper and gradually switch to finer grits for a polished finish. Wipe away the dust with a damp cloth.

Choose the Varnish: Select a varnish appropriate for your banister's material. Water-based varnishes are easier to work with and have less odor, while oil-based varnishes provide a more traditional look but require more ventilation.

Apply the First Coat: Stir the varnish thoroughly to ensure even distribution. Use a brush to apply a thin, even coat of varnish, following the direction of the wood grain. Allow it to dry as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Sand Between Coats: Lightly sand the banister between coats with fine grit sandpaper to ensure a smooth finish. Wipe away the dust before applying the next coat.

Apply Additional Coats: Repeat the process for 2-3 coats or until you achieve the desired level of sheen and protection. Be sure to allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.

Finish and Buff: Once the final coat is dry, gently buff the surface with a clean cloth to bring out the shine and smoothness of the varnish.

Maintenance: Regularly clean the banister with a damp cloth and avoid using abrasive cleaners to preserve the varnish's appearance.

Remember to work in a well-ventilated area, and follow the specific instructions provided on the varnish product you choose.
