It’s been busy recently and we’ve been slacking with our posts.
A bit off restoration/ conservation here. A heavily carved walnut Charles II high back carver chair. This had lots of old woodworm making it very fragile in a few areas. The tension of the caned backrest gave us a challenge. We used a paper backed walnut veneer to add strength to the rear and then disguised to match the existing finish. This give the back strength again.
The arm was refitted, repaired and any splits strengthened with hidden dowels, touched out and just a wax to keep things as original as possible.

A flame veneered Mahogany longcase Grandfather clock made by Lassell Park. This needed a bit of love. A few repairs needed to the cabinet and the main work was to strip the old water damaged polish and then French polish to show the flame mahogany at its best. A clean of the brass face & gilt areas and looking very handsome again.

A Gordon Russell double helix sideboard with aged and faded rosewood doors. A strip, very gentle sanding of the doors and cabinet. We then built up the layers of oil and then a wax to finish. Replacement brass ring handles to suit the piece and all finished.

A tired looking French Art Deco lined oak chest of drawers.
The top had some water damage probably from a plant pot. The veneer had bubbled and needed ironing flat.
All drawers running smoothly after some interior repairs. Re-limed where necessary and the colour evened out. Looking much better now.

A Vanson Mahogany & Satinwood sideboard with an interesting water mark, splits, deep scratches and a snapped ply handle.
After clamping and glueing the split we could sand the top. Being solid timber always helps as we can sand the deep scratches out. We still needed oxalic acid as the water mark caused a dark shadow.
The handle was repaired with some paper backed veneer and held in place with a chapped block till dry.
A few coats of oil and all finished.

A very decorative inlaid French cabinet with lots of of missing pieces of veneer and a locked drawer with no key. After carefully opening the drawer we made a new key and then onto the time consuming job of veneer matching and then touching out and polishing.

It’s been a while since we last posted.
This handsome Victorian Mahogany chest of drawers looked like something had been leaking on it for a period of time. Very thick veneer on top had warped and then bubbled.
Some serious glue and clamp work needed. Stripping of the old polish, acid to remove the old water marks. We kept some of the old dents and bruises to leave in keeping with the rest of the cabinet. A light sand, polish with a hint of black/green to match the existing colour and then a good wax.

A very well used extending Mahogany dining room table. You don’t usually see the polish worn through like this. The mahogany has been bleached from all of the cleaning over the years. We had to repair the runners underneath as a support was broken. Once all repaired we stripped, sanded, a stain and then many hours of polishing and sanding to build up the polish to give the mirror effect. You need patience when it comes to French polishing πŸ˜…

The perils of nail varnish remover. It’s basically a solvent so it will eat into any finish on your furniture if dropped or spilt.
Another common accident if spilt and left causing the same issue is diffuser oil. Quite a common occurrence.
