Lonicera × purpusii 'Winter Beauty' is true to its name. The scent is citrusy and so intense. And it has a long flowering season meaning I've been able to bring branches into the house for a couple of months to enjoy its perfume.

Who said you cannot have flowers in your garden in winter? This is Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles', a mouthful, but you'll agree it's a beauty. In my garden it grows over an arch, allowing me to look up into the nodding flowers.

Some plants' seasons extend further than we think. It's not just the pretty flowers or the nice foliage. Seed heads have an architectural quality in many plants, like this Berkheya purpurea, which contrasts beautifully with the white snow in the Horniman Museum's South African prairie gardens.

There a bittersweet feeling when Autumn arrives. It heralds the winter times coming, but don't let that stop you enjoying its spectacular colours. The main tree in there is a Parrotia persica, the Persian ironwood, a tree on the larger side for small gardens, but worth every inch of space if you can accommodate it.
