There seems to be sycamores seedlings everywhere! Acer pseudoplantanus is thought to be an archaeophyte meaning it was introduced before 1500AD. Sycamore conducts a process called 'allelopathy' in which it can release toxins leading to weakening and killing the plants around it so it can gain sufficient growth to outcompete for light and water.
Conversely Sycamore seeds are eaten by birds, bark is eaten by insects, and the flowers provide a good source of pollen and nectar for bees and other insects. But I think in this garden border they needed to go!
