Buying a garden tap connector sounds simple until you realise there are at least four common BSP thread sizes, and picking the wrong one means leaks, returns, and a wasted afternoon. BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the thread standard used on virtually all UK outdoor taps and hose fittings, but the sizes vary more than most people expect.

Here's what catches people out most often: standard domestic outside wall taps typically use a 1/2" BSP inlet, but the outlet (where your hose connector attaches) is often 3/4" BSP. Older garden taps can use a 5/8" BSP outlet, which needs a specific connector rather than a standard one.
