Following a routine check on a property and it’s trees, we was concerned about a defect on the base as it showed signs of decay and bark necrosis.

We recommend a resistograph and a more in-depth investigation carried out.

A fungus was identified as Kretzschmaria frusta also known brittle cinder.

Once the fungus has infected its host the infection is terminal for the life of the tree.

It can result in sudden breakage in otherwise apparently healthy trees, with visually healthy crowns.

The resistograph came back with over 50% decay at the base of the tree.

So sadly the tree had to be taken down for the safety of the public and the clients property.
