Let's check back in with the UK's first Passive House Retrofit (Non-domestic)

More than 22,000 food parcels and 3,000 art packs have been given away since March 2020 at the Mildmay Community Centre

A new community seed bank has been growing, and they've started delivering boxes of fresh, organically grown veg The Centre will be open this winter, helping the community by providing a warm space

A massive well done to the team at the Mildmay, and we're so happy to see the Centre accomplishing such amazing things!

The late Max Fordham OBE was a pioneer of his age, and we are incredibly honoured to have partnered with him for one last project.

How we built a house on a slope 🤔

The site is located in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty', where we were required to cut the ground floor into the hill.

By positioning the utility areas in the hill, we kept the ✨gorgeous view✨ in sight for the living areas through large floor-to-ceiling windows.

In addition to a beautiful, minimalistic interior, solar panels and Passive House features combine to make this a fully electric, ultra-efficient Passive House Plus, generating 1.5X more energy than it uses 🤯

How do you teach an old building new tricks?

The Mildmay Centre is the first Passive House certified non-domestic retrofit in the UK. 95% energy savings were reached over the first winter of operation, with only 7% of extra cost compared to a basic retrofit according to regulations, highlighting the potential of retrofit.

We designed London's first Passive House!

'What's a Passive House?', you might ask. A Passive House is a low-energy, healthy and comfortable building designed using existing technology to minimise energy waste, mostly through heating, with all heating demands provided by 'passive' methods such as heat from the sun, appliances and even the inhabitants themselves!

The Camden Passivhaus uses 90% less energy than a typical house with less than £100 in bills in the first year!

Here at bere:architects, we take words to action and lead by example.

The Muse is director Justin Bere's own home and studio. Starting in 2002, this experimental self-build house aims to become and keep evolving as one of the most holistically ecological buildings in the UK.

The Muse is one of the earliest examples in the UK of a biodiverse green roof 🌱. With a thriving bee colony and wildflower meadows, the Muse represents an oasis amidst mundane city houses.
