Westview is clad in charred white painted timber. The process begins by scorching the wood until the natural resin rises to the surface, creating its durability. A wire brush is then worked along the grain to remove the soft wood, before two coats of white paint are applied. Finally, the timber is sanded back to reveal the grain beneath.

The driftwood table by Piet Hein Eek sits beneath the Corten-surrounded window at Westview Cottage, anchoring the dining space between the main living area and the galley kitchen. Framed by expansive glazing, the kitchen draws views directly across the Dungeness landscape towards the lighthouses.

Externally, the composition retains the ad-hoc and layered character of Dungeness architecture, whilst internally the spaces are calm, connected and unified through light, material and view.

Westview Cottage is designed around light, framed views and a material palette drawn directly from the surrounding landscape of Dungeness. Large openings stretch towards the coastline, distant lighthouses, Dungeness Power Station and the barren desert.

Salt and pepper polished concrete floors echo the texture of the shingle beyond. Throughout the house, the boundary between inside and outside is deliberately blurred, allowing the changing light and coastal landscape to become part of the everyday experience of the home.

Foxbridge reflects the tranquillity of the South Downs. Formerly a golf course, Hollaway Studio has designed an all-inclusive wellness retreat that gives a new identity to the landscape while honouring its past life.

Visitors will travel the site by golf caddy, embracing a slower form of travel associated with the recent staycation boom. Sussex vernacular-style lodges will sit alongside the lakefront Urban Blossom Poppies blooming along the water’s edge. A spa complex, tennis courts, swimming pools, and a farm shop stocking local Sussex produce complete the scheme, rooted in an ethos of stillness and sustainability.
