Restoration Vs Conservation Vs upsycling
---------------------------------------------
Have a good Monday morning, restoration blogger is with you again! Once we had a discussion with my friends - if you repaint a chair is it restoration or not? There is a pretty clear definition: restoration is a process of making a restoring object to look identical to how it was originally created. It is different from the conservation that eliminates all damage, but does not mask them. In this case when you make a new chair leg it will look visually different from originals. Upcycling (re-use) changes the restoring object. It can be both a purely external change (coating) and a complete change of function (bench from the drawer).
For example, one of my last works is a home barometer made in the 1930s. It is a typical representative of art deco - direct, parallel lines, clear edges.
It was very, very dirty, obviously it had never been cleaned during 80-90 years of its existence. Thick patina of metal oxides, drops of paint, dust and traces of smoking. Apparently, it was covered with french polish and was dark enough. When I cleared it, I decided just cover it with danish oil to highlight the beautiful oak's grain. So technically it's upcycling, not restoration :)
Thank you for reading through! Have a fun and creative day!

-- What color would be good? --

I got this baby chair from a charity shop, it's made of the softest ever pine. Someone lovingly carved it about 50 years ago. It doesn't have an antique value, but is so nice that it is impossible not to buy it.
They say that it is very reminiscent of a chair from a famous paintings from the Arles series of Van Gogh.
Some kids used to use it very active, so I had to glue it and give it a good cleaning. Now it's waiting for finishing.
What color would be good?
