This is an exceptionally rare Bakhshayesh carpet from the second half of the 19th century. What separates a Bakhshayesh from other regional rugs is its soul. While other workshops were producing rigid, symmetrical patterns, the Bakhshayesh weavers were creating ‘paintings’ in wool.
Notice the decorative, almost fluid design—it’s fascinating how the weaver chose to break symmetry, trusting their instinct over a fixed pattern. When an antique rug begins to fray, it isn’t just losing its fringe—it’s losing its foundation. Because hand-knotted rugs rely on tension, losing the end means the knots can slide right off the warp threads like beads on a broken string.

That is why the art of putting in stop-ends (hand-overcasting) is the absolute foundation of rug restoration. It looks like a simple line of stitching, but it requires precise, rhythmic tension to lock the final rows of knots permanently in place.

Without a masterfully executed stop-end, any cosmetic repair you do to a fringe is just a temporary band-aid. True conservation starts by securing the anchor.

Check the ends of your rugs—if you see individual knots loose, it’s time for a stop-end before the pattern is lost. 📩

At the Christie’s April 2026 sale, Lot 174 shattered its £35K estimate, selling for just over £69K (£69,850). On paper, it’s an auction victory. In reality? It was an absolute bargain.
The object is a colossal, rare Antique Silk Heriz carpet. The defining detail? It is DATED. In the antique world, a woven inscription is the ultimate premium—it is a documented, verified timestamp of living history.

Consider what happened roughly 150 years ago: a team of master weavers spent years hand-tying millions of individual silk knots to engineer a carpet of this scale. It survived a century and a half of light, dust, and history to reach us in magnificent condition.
Now, look at the price tag. For £69K, you couldn’t buy a minor sketch by a mid-tier modern artist or a bronze sculpture from the same era.
