Office S&M

Office S&M Office S&M is an award-winning architecture practice, that designs joyful buildings which are an experience.

Office S&M’s work explores the re-framing and re-appropriation of architectural styles and materials, in order to challenge preconceptions and open up new ways of solving problems. Driven by the desire to celebrate the materiality, colour and richness in the details of the everyday, our designs are generated by narratives and often encourage a response from the public. We focus on creating persona

l and highly individual designs for our clients. We work on architectural projects with a range of scales in the public and private sector. We are committed to engaging with our clients, the public and the context of our projects.

Moon House is a townhouse in Kensington which has undergone a complete renovation with the addition of a three-storey rear extension for two art collectors.

The design balances the practical needs of a functional home with the character of an art gallery.
Thanks to an amazing team and our wonderful clients for their openness and vision.

✨ Old soul, new purpose. We are so excited to introduce our latest collaboration with .co : MEplace Islington.

Located in the heart of Islington, we’ve transformed a historic building into a thoughtfully retrofitted nursery that honours its past while looking toward the future. By preserving original features like the exposed timber structure and wooden floors, we’ve created a space that feels homely, warm, and full of stories. 🪵🏛️

This isn’t just a building; it’s a learning tool designed to spark curiosity and support young learners in a nurturing environment. Designed around the .co “Golden Thread” curriculum, the nursery features a palette of neutral, natural materials and creates a homely environment where children are encouraged to investigate and grow.

New project 🍾
Cork Loft is a loft extension and refurb in Walthamstow where we reimagined traditional building materials by replacing them with cork alternatives. Thanks for the feature and for the lovely write up.

Cork is one of the world’s most sustainable resources, harvested without harming the tree, and this space is a showcase of its versatility. From cladding, insulation, and flooring to even the external render, cork has shaped every detail of this project.

A huge thank you to our amazing clients and Anais 🩵💛

We are really excited to have been shortlisted for the Gateways to Whitechapel Market competition. A collaboration with and the fantastic all female team , .supernatural, and Velocity TP.

There is magic in the clutter at Whitechapel Market. It is a place full of stories, people and the bustle of everyday life. Through a series of six gateway installations, we want to celebrate the unique character of the area.

A new landscape of play, resting and rain gardens provide new facilities for those visiting the market. New projections onto the town hall offer a canvas for the community to display local artists’ work or to celebrate local events.

If you can spare some time please vote for our proposal we would be so grateful! 🙏 Follow a link in our bio

We’re excited to say that the new Green Street Library is on site, and here is a little ‘before and after’ of one of the spaces inside.

The library will provide brand new facilities for the changing needs of libraries in Newham, it’s a pleasure to be delivering this for

The space has been designed as an exemplar of community wealth building. To make it comfortable for local people we did everything from directly paying residents to brief us, through to young people carving comfy seats for the new space in Minecraft. Now we’ve doubled down on that by delivering the £1.6m project with Newham based contractor Olli.

We are running ‘in progress’ tours of the construction site over the next few months, do drop us a message if you would like to come along 👷👷‍♀️

Looking forward to showing more as the works progress, led by cliented by Ralph Hanus

We’re delighted to present Goldsmith Mews, our recently completed housing project in Chalk, Kent. This development of four homes demonstrates our approach to unlocking the potential of infill sites, transforming a previously derelict garage plot into high-quality housing.

We are honoured that the project’s approach and ex*****on have been widely covered in the architectural press, including in

A special mention goes to the accompanying comment piece in The Architects’ Journal, where we were invited to discuss the critical need to deliver more homes on small sites. Goldsmith Mews serves as an exemplar of how design led solutions can successfully address housing needs in dense environments, offering a meaningful and valuable alternative to generic design.

A glimpse of Goldsmith Mews through its suburban neighbours.

This development turned disused garages into four new family homes, while re-establishing the lost vernacular weatherboarding of the village. We’re looking forward to showing more of the project, and our approach to new housing on small sites.
