'Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) with Wild Sweet William (Phlox maculata) in a London garden'

As well as photographing, I'm also a gardener and garden designer and the below was taken at one of my favourite jobs. It's an unusual space what with being in the style of a traditional cottage garden and made up almost exclusively of perennials and bulbs. Many of the plants self-seed and create their own beautiful combos as you can see...

Winter is the perfect season to prune and tidy up trees. I had a good workout (3 hours!) working on this overgrown 🍏 tree today with a mini chainsaw. That ivy needs to go too as it's damaging it...

This garden was given a complete overhaul by me in 2018. At that point there was more gravel than planting! I took this video before I gave the plants a gentle trim so as not to deprive pollinating insects still active this mild autumn...

March versus September.
So pleased how well this new planting in Eltham has established!
The client is chuffed so we're creating an even larger 'sibling' border to be planted up this autumn...

Back in March I was commissioned to create a pair of borders, cut out of an existing lawn, full of sensory plants for my client's children to enjoy. The new plants have filled up the space really quickly. And both the kiddies and local bees are very happy with the results apparently!

The plants I use in my projects will usually have been tried out by me in my own garden (1st pic) before I include them in plantings (2nd + 3rd pic). This particular project was a shady border in Charlton designed to give colour and interest all year round. Give it a couple of years and those plants will have filled the border nicely!

Every year my own little garden looks that bit different. Plants get added/removed and pots (too many to count!) get moved around to make the most of the sunny spots. This year is the most colourful I can remember it...

Lavenders need regular hard pruning or get leggy and 'old' before long. Give them a light trim in autumn (so as to enjoy the silvery foliage over the winter) then cut them back hard come spring (always above a live shoot though as the woody stem won't regenerate).

Today, in the Plumstead Common area I replaced these worn out plants with Normany lavender (variety Grosso), grown for use in the perfume industry. Although diminutive now, they're fast growers so it won't be long before they start making an impact - and hopefully attracting insect life 🐝 🐝🐝

Feels so good to be out plant shopping for new design projects again. Who else is enjoying this glorious weather? β˜€οΈβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈ
