On 23rd September 2024, during our National Executive Committee's Annual General Meeting at the Annaul Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, I had the honour of meeting our Right Honourable Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer.
On behalf of the British Indian/Hindu community, I extended an invitation for our Prime Minister to visit and pay respects to the Lord Basaveshwara monument, located opposite Westminster Parliament at the Albert Embankment, along the bank of the River Thames.
As you know, this monument holds profound significance for the British Indian/Hindu community. It was the first statue in the UK that was conceptually approved by the British Cabinet in 2013. Furthermore, it was the first statue in Great Britain to be unveiled by an Indian Prime Minister.
The monument was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 14th November 2015, and more recently, the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, paid tribute to Lord Basaveshwara on 5th March 2023.
