The west elevation employs a one meter deep double-skin façade that acts both as a thermal buffer and a stack-ventilated “flue”, enabling natural airflow across the floor plate and reducing mechanical cooling for roughly 70% of the year. Automated colored aluminum sun-shades rotate within the cavity in response to light and heat, giving the façade a dynamic appearance while managing solar gain and daylight.
The design shows how architecture and performance can be deeply intertwined: the skin is part of the building’s ventilation, comfort and identity.
Could this system be a precursor to today’s smart façade strategies that seek to link form, control and climate?

Architect: 3DReid | Façade Consultant: Buro Happold | Main Contractor: BAM Construction | Client: The Co-operative Group
The double-skin façade at 1 Angel Square integrates a naturally ventilated cavity that moderates thermal conditions year-round. External glazing shields the inner façade from direct solar gain, while automated louvers within the cavity adapt to shifting temperatures and daylight levels. This responsive façade design contributes to the building’s BREEAM “Outstanding” rating, achieving exceptional energy performance for its size and occupancy.
The project illustrates how adaptive envelopes can evolve from passive enclosures into active systems regulating comfort and energy flow.
Could such dynamic façades become a standard benchmark in carbon-neutral architecture?

Cluj Arena is a multi-purpose stadium located in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Opened in 2011, it has a seating capacity of approximately 30,000 and is primarily used for football matches, hosting the local team, CFR Cluj. The façade is defined by curved aluminum fins that create a ribbon-like form. The ventilated design allows natural airflow, while lighting highlights its flowing geometry at night. The venue also accommodates concerts and various cultural events throughout the year. The state-of-the-art facility features modern amenities, including VIP areas and a full-service media center, making it a key location for both sports enthusiasts and event-goers. Its design integrates with the surrounding landscape, offering scenic views and a lively atmosphere.
