EcoAlex

EcoAlex Welcome to Ecoalex - ways to improve your home: using less energy, using less water and encouraging wildlife & nature.

Ecoalex is here to tackle one of the largest areas of energy use in the UK, our houses. We all recognise that we need to make the most of our scarce resources and modern homes built to new regulations such as the Code for Sustainable Homes go a long way towards achieving this. However most of us don't live in a new build house but are in a Victorian terrace or a flat in a Georgian town house with

all their eccentricities, draughts and large windows. So what can we do to reduce our consumption without knocking them down and starting again? Ecoalex offers a bespoke service for your house. An initial assessment of your property will reveal opportunities to improve your home that will suit all budgets. From this assessment we can then help you implement the projects that you like and help you make your home a greener more efficient place to live. I have over 15 years experience of working in the construction industry and have built up a wide range of knowledge on a diverse range of topics during this time. I spent ten years at CIRIA managing book sales, research projects and finally setting up their training department. Key projects included:

Environmental good practice on site, contributed to new editions of the publication and developed the training course with partners. Buildings for all to use, worked to promote disability access to the construction industry

Archaeology and development, project managed research and also contributed to a best practice publication

Green roofs, produced green roof training course with Dusty Gedge and Gary Grant of the Green Roof Consultancy

SUDS, produced and helped update SuDS training courses and promoted SuDS concept in the UK and Ireland. Since then I have been concentrating on marketing and ecology work for The Ecology Consultancy and the development of Ecoalex to help people improve their houses. Eco retrofit qualifications include

Member of the Green Register

Member of the Institute for sustainability's Flash programme

Other qualifications I have acquired recently

Our local primary schools are facing rising energy bills — money that could be better spent supporting pupils and teachers.
At Selce (South East London Community Energy), where I work, we’re launching a community share offer to fund an LED lighting upgrade at a local primary school. By replacing old lighting with efficient LEDs, the school can significantly reduce its electricity use, cut carbon emissions, and lower its energy bills.
The savings can then go back into the things that really matter: education, resources, and support for students.
Community shares are a way for local people to invest in projects like this — helping schools save energy while supporting community-led climate action.
If you’re interested in supporting a project that benefits both our community and the climate, you can find out more here:
https://selce.org.uk/about-us/shares/
And please feel free to share with anyone who might be interested.

Looking for insulation in walls. The first one had some mineral wool in it above dpc level. The second one didn't have any insulation but plenty of wildlife, spider webs and old wasp nests. Might need to improve that wall a bit. Good to use the borescope to see what's going on inside them.

Then used this information to update the whole house plan for the property.

On the way back from a Whole House plan retrofit survey. Used the Flir thermal imaging camera and found this cold patch in the extension. Some inconsistency in the loft insulation I think.

A green roof I made in Camberwell, starting to develop and flower in the spring. Assuming all rain hasn't ended and in a year or two this will be a mad of wildflowers and plants.
