Barcelona shows what happens when cities decide that people, not cars, deserve the best space. Superilla Barcelona (Superblocks) is an award-winning urban planning model that demonstrates the power of green spaces and inclusive governance.
Based on extensive citizen engagement, four key streets in the Eixample district were transformed into vibrant green axes, linking strategically-placed, leafy squares. The goal: improve the local microclimate, support public health, and strengthen community through quality public space.
Superblocks return the city to its residents.
This infrastructure puts humans at the heart of design, encouraging people to move, gather, and interact with each other and nature in new and accessible ways.
With additional green hubs underway in Sant Marti, the Superblock model is growing.
