Be warned all architectural enthusiasts, if you are planning a visit to the rural new town of Binhai...there are no 1.2 million books to be seen in their new celebratory world largest library. This is just another classic case of ‘interiorism’ with zero exteriority since it is sited inside a Mall-like Cultural Centre. Cascades of cracked shelves with no ‘real books’ and hazardous stairways...‘formlessness filled with absolute uselessness’ - another theoretical project by another prolific Dutch architectural design firm, experimenting their ideologies in a less privileged society. A pitiful sight! Hence pardon my post-apocalyptic vision of this introspective look into the future of public literary resource.

A delightful hidden gem on the banks of the Huangpu River stands another creative assemblage of material and light by the office of Kengo Kuma. Shipyard 1862 displays the turning of time from what was then in 1972 to the new sensibilities of the millennia construct! Precision machine tooled cable structure to the likes of a clock-smith, has enabled these terracotta bricks to take flight and stay afloat indefinitely!

A story so familiar with so many of my women colleagues in Architecture. Amanda was always one of my many mentors and I hope she will continue to be an inspiration to many more of my young female graduates just starting out to becoming a voice and projecting their presence in an architectural career.
